Funny that and then people who assault - deal drugs - dont get sentenced.

Something very wrong - when someone who privately uses a very soft drug for personal use is jailed yet real drug dealers of hard drugs and violent criminals seem to spend no time at all in prison.

One rule for George and one rule for the bent copper.

One rule for George and one rule for the bent copper.

It was a DUI charge not a possession charge, for which would gotten a slap on the wrist. personally, I welcome the sentence as I am a road user also, as is my wife.

A 10 year driving ban would have been better.

George cant drive. He burnt me up in North London when he had a jag and was totally irresponsible behind a car wheel. Thought then it was only a matter of time before he was done for driving offences.

But the truth is - a jail sentence wont do him any good. It will just cost the taxpayer £1000+ a week for the four weeks ( and I bet he gets his own cell for his own protection and probably wont come out of it very often unless other inmates are locked in ) If he wants drugs they are openly available in these prisons - when Pete Doherty was in Pentonville he was kept in substances - and there is the "meds" stuff which is handed out as well.....so it is no real punishment in my view having been a "Guest" without conviction earlier this year.

The taxpayer just gets hammered with a big bill yet again for a celeb. Community service would have been humbling - embarassing and helpful to the people. As it is this is in my view a waste of public money.

He must get a driver now - and should never be allowed to drive again./

They tried a driving ban on him in 2007 ,it didn't work, he offended again. Perhaps losing his liberty will do the trick. I hope so.
Incidentally, regarding your implication that he was unfairly treated... [i]"One rule for George and one rule for the bent copper..."[i] On 26 February 2006, he was arrested for possession of Class C drugs, an incident that he described as "my own stupid fault, as usual." He was cautioned by the police and released. I don't care if he does drugs personally, just not whilst driving.

Funnily enough though I would normally say prison for such "crimes" is ridiculous, I do think George's crazy repeat offending was asking for trouble. And prison, for once, might actually do him some good.

But what will prison do for him ? He will be in there for 4 weeks which is no time at all to get to feel "imprisoned"

Only people who are in there for a year or more really know what it is like to do a "stretch"

I did 9 weeks or so. I did not know when or if I would ever get out - I was not under a sentence and had no idea of what was happening in the real world. But it was not at all a "punishment" because it was comfortable and the meals were good and I met lots of interesting people. Everyone who worked there was fantastic and helpful and I have great respect for those who work in Prisons now. They put up with so much.

In addition I felt humbled to see so many people whose lives were wrecked and had very little hope. I did my best to help people - and I know that JK did that and has done that ever since.

But as a punishment it did not work. Those who were convicted were treated the same - and apart from taking their liberty away it seemed to be just a spartan way of living. Very similar to that in boarding schools in the 60s and 70s !!! which you would have to pay £2,000 a term !!!

I cant see how this can improve George Michael or help him ?

Not long now before the exclusive "inside" stories come along. I think the homophobic media will suggest he's been playing around with the prisoners.

I'm astonished there haven't been false accusers (I gather there are dozens for all celebrities these days) and suspect they will emerge sooner rather than later.

As for prison; I actually disagree BR - in my experience it's the short, sharp shock of jail that impacts and that dies away as the dull monotony of prison life takes grip.

Maybe if you go through a trial and get convicted it is more real than the weird experience that I had.....perhaps because I woke up one morning and ended up in a cell the next it was totally unexpected and so quick that I hardly had time to even consider what was happening - it was like watching something on TV.....

But even so - I felt locked up and so on. But I did not feel that it was a shock in the sense that you suggest JK. But there again I suppose it may be different for a celebrity because you are aware that many millions are looking on......you see for ordinary people without a national or international profile I dont think going to prison is a big deal.......it is upsetting to not be able to see your family - it is limiting in terms of what you can do or where you can go - but at the end of the day prison in the UK is humane and you get treated well as long as you dont kick off !!

I dont see how George Michael can gain anything - I dont agree with Prisons - they do not solve the problems for 80% of the people who enter them in my view. We need prisons only for people who are DANGEROUS to other people - after that community punishments are the only way.

George is dangerous to other people, especially innocent pedestrians who like to shop in Snappy Snaps without some drugged up driver crashing into them

I fail to see how a prison sentence is the answer here.

That George deserves to be punished is beyond doubt. But putting him in prison will not cure the problem, only make headlines for the wrong reasons.

If George ups and emigrates after this then over a period of time the Exchequer will lose millions of pounds, and the only gain will be a few less dented shop doors.

A sentence based on community service, with proper help to combat these drug problems was what was needed here.

Mmmm. I'm afraid that George has already had more than enough "chances" to sort his problems out.

I do not believe that putting people in prison reforms them ... but it DOES (usually) stop them doing what they have been doing, and in George's case it will make the streets safer.

<< a few less dented shop doors >> ??

How long before he actually kills or seriously maims someone ?

He should have had a 10 year driving ban - that was what would protect others.

If he decides he wants to take drugs and live like an idiot - then that is his choice as an adult. 60% of the uK population take drugs of one sort or another - and the rest drink alcohol !

It is easy to get on our "high horses" and say he should go to jail - but you dont jail someone for 4 weeks and expect that to cure them ? Does anyone really think the 4 weeks in a prison will have any effect other than remind him that taking drugs is a mugs game - which I am sure he knows already. It is not as if he is a dealer or making money out of drugs - those people SHOULD go to prison for many years.

It is a good story of course - but that is bad justice.
