An odd cove, Winner. I know there are people who swear that he made some decent movies, but I just don't see it myself. I saw one on TV once - half of it appeared to have been filmed from on top of a wardrobe, the other half deep in a ditch. I did notice one of the Death Wish movies on BBC1 a while ago, so I watched a bit out of curiosity, and thought, 'This isn't my cup of tea, but actually this is much better made than any other Winner production I've seen'. Then the credits revealed it wasn't directed by him at all! I've heard such awful things about his last effort, which featured none other than Chris Rea in the lead role, that I wouldn't mind seeing it just for the comic value. And his Sunday Times food reviews are like 'Diary of a Nobody: The Lunchtime Entries'. I wonder what the old rogue actually does most of the time these days?

I think he made a fortune on those Death Wish movies. He is very funny but also boring at the same time.

at least he is a character though.

He comes across as an arrogant, snobbish bastard, I've no time for him at all. He was born into money, made lots of lousy films and several annoying tv appearances with nothing interesting to say, and he's goddam ugly too.

I find the first two Deathwish films to be reasonable fair. I do like the dark and sleazy look of America that these two in particular give. Reminds me of being in St Louis in November 2000 and being offered a gun for a fistful of dollars!

The strange thing in both of them though is for the last 20% of both of them they sort of lose the sadness and tragedy of Paul Kersey (played by the incredibly under-rated in all his career Charles Bronson) and it becomes an anarchist festival of anything goes, so people are mutilated, stabbed, shot, disembowelled etc with absolute abandon. It's like a different film has been stuck on the end of what you have seen previously.
