At least 30 genes appear to play a role in the age at which girls reach puberty, according to an international group of scientists.

The team scanned the genetic code of more than 100,000 women, reporting their findings in the journal Nature Genetics.

In the UK, girls as young as 10 are now showing the first signs of puberty.

A specialist said early puberty was linked to an increased risk of female cancers later in life.

The reasons why girls are going through puberty several years earlier than a century ago are not well understood by scientists.

Some have suggested a relationship between early puberty and obesity, and the latest research, carried out by the Reprogen consortium of scientists from the US, Europe and Australia, supports this idea.

Among the 30 genes highlighted by their genome research were some already linked to fat metabolism and weight regulation.

Yes - it means that our Teenage Pregnancy rate keeps going up despite the attempts to stop it.

Could it be that the MTV videos added to these raging hormones means that we are "grooming" a generation of sex crazed 11 year old girls ? Obviously only a parent or a schoolteacher could honestly answer that - but I suppose the SUN has been suggesting this for a long time......

The issue for educators is this - how do girls that age control feelings that they dont really understand and legally cant understand until they are 16 years old. That gives them 6 years of peer pressure and MTV videos to contend with........

I reached puberty at 10 back in 1975,as did a number of girls in my class.

In 1975 TV had no sex on it - and pop music was the Bay City Rollers and Slade......

The pressure on kids today is massive. The whole media is like a Benny Hill programme on acid. Everyone is "doing it" or talking about it ! Just look at Miley Cyrus - Rhianna - and so on......role models for young girls !! and Lady gaga.

I think you are right BR but the pressure is on everything. You have to be successful in every single way and the facts are that 99% of the people cannot be. There is a great feeling of inadequacy.

I really despair when I go back to the UK for visits now as the country was never like that.

It's a real joy now being an old bastard. We saw the best times..they won;t come again for another 30 years !
