12 inches and getting bigger! Streets unpassable, groups of people with sledges, no vehicles, eerily quiet and well, just lovely.

So far the predictions of the freezing winter and a long one have started well. If it is like this in November then January could be a white out like last year.

London to get some snow on Tuesday to Wednesday - possibly with drifting and Siberian winds turning it into blizzards.

Who needs Global Warming !?

Never ever seen it this bad. Everwhere has come to a complete standstill. It's on its way down to the South East by which time it'll probably be a big story. I disagree BR, its freak weather conditions. Nothing more than that. It winter, let it snow!

The Met site is giving Heavy Snow Warnings now for London and South East on Tuesday and Wednesday....but they are saying it will between 5cm and 15cm - which is a massive difference ! If it is the latter then everything is going to grind to a halt again here in London because cars etc dont have Winter tyres anymore and traffic slows down to around 4mph with the resulting chaos.

In 1991 it took me 6 hours to get to North London ( 8 miles ) from my Government office near Whitehall ! in a snow shower which started around 3p.m. I arrived home near 10p.m.

Last year (Dec ) it took me 3 hours to go 3 miles on the A41 nr Watford......and it was just as scary with cars sliding everywhere.

This looks worse and I think along with the Tube Strike today this week could be totally wiped out apart from local journeys.

I agree that usually the media only cover it if it hits the South east - but this time they have provided excellent coverage to the north east and scotland - and quite right as well ! You all pay the same TV license fee etc.

Now where are the huskies ?

PS Freak ? it happened in January this year as well and in December last year........becoming a pattern and habit.

If only it were freak weather. We'll probably have to get used to this and worse for the next 20-30 winters, with sunspot activity at its lowest for centuries and apparent changes in the patterns of the jet stream.

Snow isn't that unusual in late autumn/winter. Once again, BR's mock amazement is a bit wearying. As is the ludicrous TV reporting: they are so eager to cover all bases, they're simultaneously saying it's all lovely and fun but also frightening and ominous (and, of course, they always just happen to choose Scotland to relate how "Britain" is covered in snow). I have to travel on Wednesday and it's really irritating that they can't just report things without trying to crank up the anxiety. It's like kids are presenting the news.

Snow in November like this lasting for 2 weeks is VERY unusual ! Snow in November is fairly unusual in itself but I cant remember such a prolonged period of cold ( they say it will last well into NEXT week......and already it is nearly a week long )

I agree it is the lack of Sun activity coupled with the Gulf Stream....Jet Stream thingybob.

We should be a very cold island in the UK and we are lucky to be warmed by the stream which keeps our climate temperate. The BP oil disaster seems to have slowed this current substantially according to the climate buffs - and they predicted we would have a very cold Christmas because our weather is going to come from Scandinavia - Siberia and Iceland without its warming effects.

Get wrapped up because this FREEZE may last until March if that is the case......

I will be thinking of you all as I take my daily swim in the refreshing surf at Bondi Beach and then laze about on the warm sand before retiring to my favourite bar for a Mai Thai or 2.

actually today it's pissing down with rain. Most unusual. Like the tropics. Something is happening with the weather.
