TOPIC: The Big Society fails the snow test
#66258
The Big Society fails the snow test 13 Years, 4 Months ago
As Aristotle said, if people can't understand the most simple aspects of citizenship, it's no good asking them about voting systems or macro-economic strategy. Going out to get the papers this morning, I found I was the only person in the street who had bothered to sweep my path clear of snow. Everyone was slipping around but seemed oblivious of how they could do just a tiny bit to improve the route for themselves as well as others. It's quite depressing to watch human beings get more and more passive and clueless.

All part of the "government-knows-best" Labour mantra, Prunella.

We've educated people to think that governments do things for them - and never to have any ideas or thoughts for yourself.

A classic example is "I'm ... (delete which is not appropriate) ... unemployed / a single mother / "sick" / totally thick - what are the government going to do about it?".

When will these people take some responsibility for their (sad and pathetic) lives ?

I see now the Government have actually published a 'Snow Code' for people too stupid to know the obvious things.

www.direct.gov.uk/en/nl1/newsroom/dg_191868

Dumb dumb, deeper and dumber.

Great report on BBC news this morning: 'Police say motorists who are using the motorways are making them unuseable because the tyres are moving the salt around'. So in order to keep the roads useable, motorists are supposed to avoid using them. Crazy.

Thanks for this, Prunella.

I have learnt the following (which I would never have worked out for myself LOL !!!!) -

"It’s easier to move fresh, loose snow rather than hard snow that has packed together from people walking on it. So if possible, start removing the snow and ice in the morning. If you remove the top layer of snow in the morning, any sunshine during the day will help melt any ice beneath."

What this country needs is a bit more rugged individualism.

I heard from a shop keeper that if you do the good thing and clear the path and someone slips over outside your shop, you can be sued by the slippee. Either that or plain bone-idleness. Of course the elderly people wearing smooth-soled shoes do themselves no favours.

The website is only applicable to the English as they seem to be the only ones in Europe who struggle with the concept of snow.

A bit like the Scots struggle with the concepts of healthy eating and drinking, modesty, living in the present, good music, trousers and happiness.

I remember when some relatives from New Zealand came to visit us during the great snow storm of 1978 and there was a huge fog not seen for years.

They assumed it was a normal winter and we must have been absolutely barmy for living in the UK.

Whilst we are barmy I've been caught in 2 USA blizzards and they are far better prepared for such weather.

it's all Nu Labour's fault.
