In case you want to see a very, very expensive meal... 13 Years, 3 Months ago
My Ledoyen one in Paris a fortnight ago seems to have cost nearer £350 - here's the chocolate dessert which was absolutely delicious with dark, light, milk chocolate cream, gravel made from fabulous crunchy chocolate, thin fantastic Amaretto crisps... one of the best I've ever had; click on Previous to see other courses!

I hope the service, location, company and whole experience was absolutely delightful because quite frankly-that desert looks rather overpriced !

The desserts (5 of them!) were delicious; the rest of the meal was fine but not as good; it was very over priced however but a superb location on the Champs Elysees and very good and attentive service.

First one looks like a couple of mars bars wth Rice Krispies thrown in. We call the chocolate crispies up here. A staple of many an underclass childs breakfast. The other is a Vienetta surely?

Looked a bit Vienetta; was actually turbot and more tasty than it appeared.

Haute cuisine = Haute prix

You could have spent £50 on a very good meal elsewhere instead and used the difference to buy 100 mosquito nets for Africa. Yes, believe it or not they only cost $5 dollars a piece: www.projectmosquitonet.org/

Money well spent I think!

Is this a dilemma you yourself face every time you wish to treat yourself KB? Denying yourself any luxuries in favour of mosquito nets for Africa?

I think it was Michael Winner that first said it, but by spending your money on expensive luxuries is good for the economy. You get the money back into circulation. The money you spent then gets distributed to the waiters and suppliers, they spend it on essentials, and the whole world continues to go round.

Alas, the trickle down effect is much slower with the exclusive haute cuisine restaurants due to their high profit margins going to only a few people whereas MacDonalds (for all their sins) work to low profit margins but employ hundreds of thousands of people who are likely to spend a higher proportion of their net earnings (marginal propensity to consume)than say Raymond Blanc n'est-ce pas?

Remember, benefits of buying mosquito nets:

1. They save lives
2. Going to MacDonalds keeps more people in work

Consider this famous quote:
Not everything that counts can be counted

Probably, if I had been a multi-millionaire pop mogul, I might have been rubbing shoulders with the likes of Bono and Geldof et al so the answer would have been yes. But as I'm not and I my bank balance doesn't extend into 6, 7 or 8 figures it's not a dilemma I have to face. Instead I have found true meaning through the spiritual Zen path in life where masterialism is seen as just an impermanent illusion that ultimately leads to bondage and suffering. I must add though that if we had to pay a mosquito net levy I wouldn't complain.

Remember, by acting unselfishly in helping others you send out good karma which of course always bounces back eventually!

this fantasy that McDonalds and their ilk somehow create employment has been blown out of the water years ago by economists.

They do the opposite-they keep wages low and contain jobs and at the same time create an
atmosphere where small businesses cannot prosper.

Small business have always been one of the largest creators of jobs especially in Britain yet sadly you now have two anti-small business political parties that only care for corporations.

plus the food is crap and probably dangerous to your health which the taxpayer will eventually pay for on the NHS.

What utter tosh. You certainly do not have to spend wedges of cash to eat in high class or well reputed eateries. The likes of Bono etc only eat in top restaurants? There is a very large void between Mcdonalds and high end restuarants my boy.
