TOPIC: Brighton Rock - oh dear

Brighton Rock - oh dear 13 Years, 3 Months ago
Well I loved the trailer, adore the book, am a huge Graham Greene fan, felt Mirren and Hurt and Davies would be perfect for the parts but... it all went terribly wrong.

Some great set pieces, good music, nice camera work, happy with the move to the 60s but - mainly because the lead "boy" Pinkie is awful (and 15 years too old) - it doesn't work at all.

However it is worth watching if only for the final 5 minutes which could be the worst ever in the history of movie making. Just dreadful.

I considered seeing this but just got a bad feeling...

It would take something very very special to get close to the book, although there have been good films of Graham Greene before (The Third Man being the stand-out example).

Instead, I went to see Biutiful starring Javier Bardem. Not sure whether to encourage boardmates to see it... While undoubtedly a superb film, I wouldn't say I really enjoyed it: it's a harrowing and draining experience.
