Even with a frightening earthquake-if you are white and privileged you will receive more sympathy as opposed to say, an earthquake in Haiti (although oddly the rersponse was quite amzing there)or South America, etc.

Christchurch is obviously a fairly wealthy city so..it has heaps of CTVs which is bringing us dramatic pictures plus plenty of TV crews out on the street immediately so we can see the really drama of the whole thing.

In 'third world' countries we only see the aftermath and because of the ramshackle nature of buildings hundreds more people die.

So not only do the wealthy live better..they really do get more sympathy as in the QLD floods...at the same time floods in Brazil killed hundreds of people and barely got a mention.
