Allow several hundred thousand to come and live and work here?
(NO shout the vast majority).
Add ten pounds to each of our income taxes to buy them food and drink?
(NO cry the vast majority).

Remember - this is a DEMOCRACY (we pretend) - and if it really paid attention to the opinion of the majority - we'd still be hanging people (or, to put it in media/political terms, "killing our own people").
