Always thought it was stupid to put nuclear power in an earthquake zone.
Nuclear power is a necessary evil, but an evil that needs tighter control than this.

the Navy said the U.S. 7th Fleet has temporarily repositioned its ships and planes away from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant after detecting low-level contamination in the air and on its planes in the area, the Navy said.

One ship was operating about 100 miles northeast of the power plant when "airborne radioactivity" was detected, the Navy said.

I'm all for nuclear power alongside other renewable energies such as wind or wave. Gas and oil reserves in the UK will be empty in less than ten years. Got any alternative suggestions itk?

in fact the whole Earth is an earthquake zone. Australia which is on the safest of tetonic plates still has hundreds of small earthquakes every year but they are never felt.

Japan has the most advanced nuclear program on the planet. But it only takes a culmination of events to cause a catastrophe. And it can last forever-where do we put the waste ??

Yes- the Sun King Rupert Murdoch supports nuclear plants and wants dozens everywhere because they are "safe"..see here in his speech on 'leadership' in 2010 !

(does he remind you of a movie star ?..Gollum ?)

It really sums it up when a 'sensible' country who has built these things to such a high standard is seen to be losing control of the situation. And that is the problem with nuclear power - if things go seriously wrong you can't just switch it off and pour water over it. They go on about cheap power being produced, but the UK ones will cost over £80bn to decommission over the next few decades. That is not cheap, but in the absence of oil and gas what else do you do?

Absolutely right, Foz

NO ONE knows the longterm costs of storing all this nuclear waste.

harness the sun.

after visiting Ulhuru which is as hot to buggery as anywhere I've ever been it seems to me the whole of the Australian inland could probably be hooked up to giant solar panels and supply power for the whole Pacific.

If they can build villages in Germany now where every house has solar panels it can be done anywhere.

Everything is a scam-the oil industry-the nuclear industry..they all want you to think yoyu have to have that and nothing else.

On a much smaller scale .... but I've noticed that numerous road signs in the Peak District now have solar panels on top of them.

On housing generally - solar panels are much more noticeable too.

Solar is not an independent source for powering our homes. It is only capable of working alongside current supply methods. We could always harness the hot air that comes out of itk's mouth?!

Now, now angel - just because its snowing (again !!!) there !

I see we have now advanced to dropping buckets of water on the Japan nuclear sites (and hoping for the best).

Very advanced LOL !

German Chancellor Angela Merkel about to lose key State (that her party has held for six decades) ?

The main topic during the election was nuclear power.

Looks as if the Social Democrats (and Greens) have won the argument.

(btw Has anyone else noticed how the pronunciation of the Japanese plant has been causing difficulty amongst TV presenters, who have now started to refer to it as Fu-kushima instead of Fuku-shima !!)

Now if I'd said that .... !

Perhaps its not Japanese radiation - but just coming over the border from Sellafield (or whatever they call it these days) ?

Seems a bit strange with no alternative in place.
