However, 436 people were arrested "for other things" after being searched.

Proof that the police are using these searches without justification in fishing expeditions ?

====

Only two people were arrested for terrorism-related offences last year after being stopped and searched under anti-terrorism powers.

They were among 91,500 such searches of people and vehicles in England and Wales in 2009-2010, Home Office statistics show.

Liberty said the figures demonstrated "what a blunt and counterproductive instrument" the powers can be.

and they did in Oz as well with the innocent Indian Dr Haneef arrested over the Glasgow bombs and banged up for 3 weeks...the word went out from the head of the Federal Police to find something-anything to do him for.

To give them their due..News Corp investigative journos did a brilliant job exposing the shambles.

The result- Haneef gets about $5M in compo..the head cop gets a juicy early retirement and the deputy who sent the message to 'arrest anyone..for anything' gets promoted.

I'm getting to hate all cops..nothing has been learnt by any of them anywhere and they're getting worse.

Agree totally.
Just a shame that a government with supposedly 'libertarian' credentials has done very little to address the many problems with civil liberties.
