it diminishes the power of the media.

That and that reason alone should be why you vote for it.

As happens in Oz frequently-the media denigrates an MP or candidate but if anything-the voters turn towards them.

Why ?..because they have to spend 6 months on the hustings wooing voters-unlike in the UK where they can coast in year after year on a minority vote.

Voters can see through the tabloid bullshit.

Candidates don't fear the media nearly as much..they fear the voters instead.

As it is..if everyone in the local Labour or Conservative club vote for their candidate he/she can win despite being unpopular.

And parties do their research and don't allow the media to bully them..they get out in the electorate for months beforehand canvassing voters.

so vote AV !!!..that's an order. otherwise I'll come around and break your arms.

It's depressing that the media aren't covering this properly. The outrage is the idea of an AV system that will effectively be optional - in other words, you can choose to treat it as AV or carry on voting a la first past the post. What this would almost certainly do is hand the power to the activists and the sophisticated voters in a way that the Victorian reformers desired when, prior to the second Reform Act in the 1860s, they asked for plural votes for Oxbridge graduates to counteract the newly-enfranchised 'stupid' majority. Veritas, keep your snout out of UK politics and go chase some kangaroos.

What you say Ms Minge is accurate but that is a good thing. Politicians, parties will have to work far harder to secure your vote.

Those who don't will be the losers. While the 3 main parties are well placed to do this, it does open up the way for smaller parties whther they are right or left to get a foot in.
