Item about closure of library at Kensal Rise.

Activists are campaigning against the closure.
Activists agree that cuts are necessary - but when asked - were unable to name a single "cut" which should take place instead of the library (obv suffering from "cuts for everyone else but not me" syndrome)!!

One of the campaigners is writer Alan Bennett - who described library closure as "child abuse" !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

solution= make corporations pay the tax they owe (don't even have to increase taxes)
..a good beginning would be News Corp that makes ginormous profits in the UK and sends it's profits abroad to tax shelters. Unless people really believe they are going to shut up shop and go elsewhere.

Utterly absurd !

May have made sense in the Victorian era when there was absolutely no other way to gain education, but in these days where 2 out of every 3 homes has broadband then the entire world (and education) is available at home (should you want it).

Add in that all these kids go to schools with reams of computers, (and then go on to Mickey Mouse colleges -no matter how thick you are) PLUS the vast majority of libraries remain open (I've only heard of loony Labour councils closing them) then access is available to everyone (we even provide "b_line" discounted travel schemes for people to get there).

As for being a great writer, possibly .... but anyone who can support an organisation and then complain when they carry out policies that THEY have caused must be completely bonkers !

If someone can protest at the cuts while still supporting those who caused us financial meltdown - then it really is time to send for the white vans (but then loony Labour supporters were never know for their high IQs were they?) !!!

you are really drawing a long blow by linking Nu Labour with local council decisions and tossing in Alan Bennett because he may be a Labour voter.

Books will probably be an oddity one day ( 2 big chains of book sellers in Oz have gone bust) which is probably the best reason to keep libraries !

Cuts yes,but where and by how much are debatable.

To suggest that we cut an act of humanity in order to pamper the scroungers even further is utterly absurd.

When Libya is over ... we would STILL have the scroungers.

I correct my post..now the entire Borders book chain that opened ten years ago has gone bust. It's a real sign of the times of plunging book sales.

There is a plus and minus here..everyone can self publish digital downloads and sell via Amazon but nothing will beat the feel of a real book.

We should be opening more libraries..not less.

Whose fault is it that we are in debt ? Perhaps the people who have been running the economy since 1997 maybe? (Remember the note they left - "there's no money left" !)

How is it that ONLY loony Labour councils are closing libraries (to save money for other loony programs perhaps) ?

Introduce IQ tests to qualify for the vote, I say - that should wipe the loony Labour vote out instantly.

No money would be saved - for possible investment elsewhere - we'd just pay more ... for longer.

When I worked in local government, the CEO, his minions and deputies all got new computers every year. We weren't talking about the basic ones that the rest of the workforce had. We are talking about serious bits of kit at around £2,000 a time. It's still going on, despite the CEO making serious redundancies to staff.
There is a lot of cash that can be saved in local government (the councillors are just as bad, they see it as a full time job without the full time hours), but not until the gravy train stops.
