Fascinating Wilson/Heath programme on BBC4 12 Years, 11 Months ago
I met them both and loathed both their political worlds (Wilson took 95p in the pound of every cent I earned on Everyone's Gone To The Moon in 1965) but this is a terrific look at both.

Denis Healey is looking like Bette Davis after her several strokes.

Heath was a very appealing Tory, as Tories go, apart from his absurd and incoherent Europhile obsessions. Wilson was savvy but a paranoid and thoroughly nasty piece of work. Good programme.

95p in the pound of every cent?

How does that work?

...and sixpence Ken; 19 shillings and sixpence out of every pound! I bet you spent what was left in the Trinity College refectory.

It makes one wonder how you managed to buy a Rolls Royce?

Stop it David!

I found Heath very odd - cold, almost alien. Wilson was declining when I met him and totally dried up and humourless. I still think Thatcher was - is - an amazing woman though I disagreed with most of her social policies (I approved of many of her financial and economic ones).

So, would you privatise the NHS,the police, and the dear old BBC?

Anyway, Maggie didn't have any social policies to disagree with in the first plaace - she didn't even believe that society existed. She definitely wouldn't have given us the minimum wage and the increased health spending. Instead, she gave us the Big Bang, which of course led to the rise of wide boy culture in the City and the bumbag wearing white van men; nothing to be proud of there I think.

fascinating programme, but the way they use music irritates me... playing You Really Got Me to a backdrop of 60s politicians is a bit naff, or perhaps just lazy 'it's the 60s so it must be the Kinks, so we'll put that on' when that music was being listened to by the younger generation, not by the people we're watching.

anyway, all in all a good programme.

I encountered Wilson twice..once in a rather outrageous moment not to be told here yet..and once at an art exhibition.

He was an extraordinary looking man..tiny and rotund with almost luminous white skin.

why are so many world leaders and powerful men tiny ?

"(Wilson took 95p in the pound of every cent I earned on Everyone's Gone To The Moon in 1965)"

Which was used to pay for the likes of the NHS and free university education. The rich SHOULD pay their fair share of tax. You could have easily knocked out a few more hits to make up the money lost.
