I'd like to know JK's take on the Ronan Parkes/BGT blog scandal. I read the controversial blog in question and my instinct told me that it was a mixture of facts about how the contestants are recruited combined with big chunks of fabricated lies concerning Ronan's image makeover.
I loathe unbroken voices and don't think kids of that age should enter the process. I don't believe the allegations but also feel an amount of manipulation is vital in order to get good TV and to build a successful career.
My voice is changing now, but I've been a child singer since I was 7 (I'm now 15) as a member of a church choir. I've also had my share or solo's. I know some people despise child singers but the world is a better place because of us. It's the same with boys like Ronan.
You don't have to like us, but don't despise us. We are people too.
My experience with child pop stars in the early 70s was that they are usually not mentally prepared for the promotion and marketing insanity that comes with fame. And I don't like child voices. There are exceptions. I thought Charlotte Church showed great interpretive ability (something usually lacking in the young). Like child actors - a few are great (the boy in Sixth Sense was magnificent as was Christian Bale in Empire Under The Sun) but most do not go on to become proper performers. Judy Garland did but also was screwed up. Ditto Michael Jackson. I've not heard Ronan so cannot comment.
