TOPIC: Plead Guilty?
#71377
Plead Guilty? 12 Years, 11 Months ago
As anyone listening to my lyric (see Homepage) knows that I urge accused NOT to plead guilty as promises get broken and innocent people get jailed for crimes they did not commit (and, in many cases, that never took place).

But Ken Clarke's reason (to cut prison population and prosecution expenses) was reasonable; and the tabloid hysteria (rapists and paedos will walk free) was stoopid as usual.

As The Sun is today claiming front page victory for its campaign - I suggest the following. We all stop buying The Sun. The money saved can make up for the extra taxes we have to pay in order to keep suspects locked up.

The Sun should take up this noble, unselfish campaign. "Stop buying us in order to fund extra prison places". Wot a Croosade!

Funny enough I was never offered a plea bargain. But even if I had I'd have refused.
I'm quite glad this has been dropped, because even more poor vulnerable souls would have done time for non existent crimes.

Make them work for their convictions, not sit back and get false convictions delivered to them on a plate.

I was very wary of Clarke's proposals as I thought they may lead to US style 'plea bargaining' which is an utter disgrace but the way Cameron caved in when it's clear Clarke is trying to reform the jail system which is out of control, is a far greater disgrace.

So what a cop-out of a PM who gives in to a cheap tabloid that really only represents a fraction of the citizens.

He is an idiot.

I don't think I've ever spent money on a newspaper in my life. Since I was 14 I've been using the internet for all of my news. And I don't watch the news on TV anymore. It's so bland compared to the interesting perspectives and opinions you can find on the internet where there is less censorship.

I think this was on Andrew Neil's programme the other day, but apparently it costs more to send someone to prison for a year, than it does to send them to Eton for the same period.
