another annoying thing that p**ses me off 12 Years, 11 Months ago
I loved boxed sets of TV shows..love watching them all in one go.

The entire series... like yesterday..the Legend of Robin Hood.

but why the hell do I want to see a film about how the frigging series was made ?

Just as I relax and think there is one more DVD of shows to watch it turns out to be a 'how the series was made' useless piece of information.

If I'm watching some tale of a mythical outlaw set 100 of years ago why in the hell do I need to see how the bloody arrows were made and shot and so on ?

You may not - but many like to see the ingenuity involved in film making.

How sets are made, weather disguised, animals trained etc.

And you need'nt watch it if you don't want to....

Worse than that is the so-called 'Easter Egg' phenomenon. Many DVDs come with hidden 'extra' extras that you can only find by pressing a certain combination of buttons so many times. Why? I mean, who has the time? Most people aren't even aware that they're there, so it makes no commercial sense at all. They even have 'help' sites now that advise people what is available and how they can be viewed. Wouldn't it be easier to just include them in the menu??

Those 'special edition' DVD's with extra content are sometimes very disappointing. I remember looking at a Jaws section of 'outtakes' expecting a lot of interesting footage of the actors being themselves during mistakes. There was one of Robert Shaw corpsing during his death scene and another of Richard Dreyfus fluffing his lines - that was it..!

What happens when we get the documentary on how they made the doc...etc...reminds me of a Michael Caine sketch on Spitting image from the 80s

Generally I agree and don't bother to watch them but the exception to the rule is the Making Of... DVD with An American Werewolf in London. It's almost better than the movie and that's saying something as it's one of the best films ever made.

One could say if at fits in the box then its simply added value!

Easter Eggs are not really used anymore as the major studios discovered that people were not buying dvd's because of them unless they were mentioned on the box, kinda out-witting the purpose.

Same with the broshure clips. Unless the case says 'booklet inside' the booklet adds no sales figures.

Easter eggs are still quite common and they're an absurd conceit.
