TOPIC: JK on TOTP

Re:JK on TOTP 12 Years, 9 Months ago
That episode of TOTP contained so much payola dross, it was hard to keep watching. That at this point they were even using non-chart "new releases" shows the "power of the brown envelope" really had a hold of the show, looking at the database Queen's "You're My Best Friend" didn't figure once despite making no.7, not even as a playout. Sunfighter didn't seem so bad but who was sponsoring Glamourpuss, Bobby Goldsboro (possibly the worst thing I have ever heard) & The Chanter Sisters? In this hallowed company, cutting "It Only Takes A Minute" seems all the more absurd.
One good thing though - it made Status Quo seem absolutely brilliant which of course at that point in time they still were.

The BBC do seems to have a very schizophrenic attitude to JK - a couple of weeks ago "Everyone's Gone To The Moon" was used in a Radio 2 docu on 1965 and even featured in the trailers for the show aired all over prime daytime R2

"Everyone's Gone To The Moon" is just too good a song for them to ignore.

JK can at least know that his music will outlive his critics..and probably the ghastly tabloid mentality.

I've put my opinion forth on the Mausoleum Club forum (rather well, though I say so myself) www.mausoleumclubforum.org.uk/xmb/viewth...id=22959&page=16

Yes very good Chris and seems to have a surprisingly large amount of support.

Well, there could more "support" coming courtesy of next weeks TOTP.
I almost choked on my peppermint tea when this came on - are those garters, because at a casual glance they could be panties the guys pull out of their pockets and casually toss aside as they start singing...

Top Of The Pops again tonight, pop pickers!
This weeks "Payola Special" is a band called 1776 - truly a sight to behold, and not in a good way - the singer looks like middle-aged mass murderer! Look out too for Sheer Elegance (as posted above) singing a piss-poor song about being tempted to shag U16 girls and chucking garters and/or panties around the stage whilst they do. Last, but not least, it's the return of The Hairy Monstrous Ego - have fun seeing how many times he can utter the pompous phrase "piece of music" in his 15 second links!

On the plus side, there's another chance to see the first performance of the marvellous "Boston Tea Party" by The Sensational Alex Harvey Band (with Alex, it has to be said, looking like the bastard offspring of Dennis The Menace & Susan Boyle - must that Scottish gene pool, eh) and the first performance of Johnny Wakelin & the supreme "In Zaire" - strange how the two most inventive hits of that summer were created by seasoned pro's born in the 1930's....

Here's a great clip of JK on TOTP which has just turned up on YouTube.

It is actually from 28th June 1984 and not as stated:

love both clips..Sheer Elegance (camp outfits !) singing about not wanting to be tempted by someone who may be under 16 !

pleased producers no longer have the audience so listlessly shuffling in front of the stage !

Ah Robbie yours is the reaction of a huge number of complaints to the BBC - there's a large negative reaction to Ronnie. I liked him a lot and have no problems with him.

I know that is something regularly said about Biggs but he didn't wield the cosh himself did he against the unfortunate guard.

It's odd- politicians like Blair etc and now Cameron who have ordered planes to bomb other countries and are directly responsible for the deaths of others (Iraqis, Libyans whether 'rebels' or Ghaddafi supporters) are lauded.

Incidentally...I attended many parties in a flat in Queensway where a tough Scot often talked about his plan to kidnap Ronnie Biggs little realising that he was serious when he actually went through with it 6 months later (unsuccessfully because of the kid in JK's interview !!)

Ronnie's release was not by the courts it was political he should of never been flown back and thrown back in prison. None of the other train robbers served long sentences and the said Ronnie never killed the train guard just took the money.
