Nobody seems to have noticed the key point of the riots... 12 Years, 8 Months ago
The power and efficiency of the social networks. They brought change (good? bad?) in North Africa. They are the key reason for the efficiency of the rioters. Twitter. Facebook. Yes, the Internet has many good points but also many, many bad ones. Which is why we joined it over a dozen years ago.

Police - "we'll bring Police from everywhere to London to stop looting".

Rioters - "OK, let's riot in Manchester, Birmingham, Salford...."

Duh!

visiting my local library this afternoon and noticing a gaggle of schoolgirls twittering and face-booking on their ipads, it's clear the younger generations have seized the internet and are running rings around their elders.

(needless to say- I had to observe this out of the corner of my eye in case I was accused of being a pedo! )

In Manchester young people using twitter to arrive en masse to help clean up the mess. Unfortunately none of them will make it to the front pages.

Cameron completely out of his depth. Water cannon and baton rounds would be 'useless' a police spokesman said, due to the sparodic nature and small pockets of looters.

This is when we need a Thatcher!

They are just using the main communication tool available, JK. There were riots in London in the 50s, 60, 70s and 80s. Its a little more spontaneous now rather than planned.

If this had occurred in the US, the military would have been called in with orders to shoot on sight as they did when katrina hit New Orleans. Of course it would have been a lot worse in the US since almost everyone has a gun.

And I guarantee it will happen soon in America; now the power of Twitter/Facebook and the Internet/mobile phone media has been discovered as a tremendous criminal asset, just watch the Yanks make the most of it.
