That's the way to do it ! - - - - - - plans to evict rioters !!! 12 Years, 9 Months ago
At last the Government is listening to sense and reason.

Cameron announces plans to allow landlords (inc Councils) to evict people from social housing if they are anti-social (ie rioters and looters).

PS - Anyone see the woman on the News (or it may have been Newsnight) saying "you should see the sort of houses that they give us" ... thats the whole point, love ! These houses are GIVEN to you - at massive subsidy to the real workers / tax payers.

If you don't like it you can always get a job, save and buy your own home LOL !

Several councils - including Manchester, Wandsworth and Salford - have said they will take action to evict tenants if they are found to be involved in rioting.

Ravi Govindia, the leader of Wandsworth Council, said: "People who live in council homes should be under no illusions about the fate that awaits them if they are found to have been involved in Monday night's destruction and thuggery."

silly announcements that show David has a lot to learn.

You can only evict people if they break terms of their lease. You can only remove people's social security if they are no longer eligible for it.

Great idea and It's already started happening....you can bet that greedy human rights lawyers will be jumping on the bandwagon with this. At taxpayers expense.

I see all you people talking about 'David'.....

and yes I have to admit, it is I David Cameron who has been masquerading under this thinly disguised name- clever use of lower case, eh?

I used to be Tony Blair but then I became David Cameron, tho few of you will have noticed, as we are essentially the same xxx

so I see but I'm not sure collective punishment is a solution.

Don;t know how many 'greedy' human rights lawyers there are but this is surely headed for the courts.

It sets up a two-tier justice system.

If a member of a household in an owned property commits a crime they will face a lesser penalty as opposed to those living in a council flat where the entire family can be evicted (which means the other family members will need to be re-housed in emergency accomodation)

Someone in an owned property is far more likely to feel more shame about their actions as they will perhaps live in more affluent areas where they will no doubt find that their families are ostracised by locals. They are more likely to have more pride I suppose and this may outweigh the fine or prison sentence they recieve as well. The rioters who live in broken areas and council owned property may not feel any shame, but will be inconvenienced by being evicted. At least they will have their possessions. This is small compared to those real victims who have been burnt out of their properties and livelihoods and have to start from scratch.

Maybe it will make them feel a little more grateful for their handouts. Maybe they will think twice about letting their 11 year old child out at night to go kicking in windows. Maybe they will realise the inconvenience that it causes the family. Prison wont do any good its own, neither will a fine because they probably wont pay it. Society in these areas is broken, but there is no easy way of controlling it. There are familes here whose parents are probably good citizens and love their children, but cannot control them and there are others who do not give a toss what their kids get up to and join in the riots themselves. There are others who have done this once and will be chastened enough never to do anything illegal again. Each case must be treated differently and I do feel that justice seems to have been be meted out too quickly like Japanese production line in response to media and 'popular' opinion rather than on a case by case basis.

It's a bit of a shoot from the hip opinion, but I like reading these boards as there are sometimes (although not always) very measured and intelligent responses to comments made and its far better for one's soul than reading message boards on the Daily Mail website where you are pummeled with the same right wing diatribe. I am pleased to admit my own opinions are sometimes turned round, but that's the whole point of these boards....

Yes, great idea. Take the angry & lawless and put them on the streets, thus ensuring they have nothing at all to lose and will therefore become even more desperate, lawless and angry.
Fucking genius.

yes I'm sure 'middle class' rioters/looters will have more public shame but the very idea that a looter's family pays a price no matter what their kids do is completely against all concepts of fairness.

Particular as the first case hasn't even resulted in a conviction, just a charge.

I see a legal minefield ahead.

It's a great idea !

Notice how the rioters disappeared the moment they knew they would be caught and put in prison ?

The same will happen with this .... we only need to evict a few - the rest will very soon get the message !

so you not only believe in collective punishment but selective punishment as well.

I'm old fashion. I reckon the person who did the crime should pay the price.

Funny. Here ITK was waving a finger of shame at the Irish presidential candidate that was defending a man who had a sexual relationship with a 15 year old and now he applause throwing those same 15 year olds out on the streets.

I was not criticising anyone for having a same sex relationship, I was criticising someone for telling lies.

Dont you understand the difference ?
