TOPIC: Democracy is a disaster
#73263
Democracy is a disaster 12 Years, 9 Months ago
Let's be honest - as brain dead politicians advocate and praise democracy - most people don't know or care and elect slick image idiots. Democracy is a disaster - we need government by experts, not amateurs.

So how would you choose the government?
I agree mainly, but how to choose is always the stumbling block.

First and foremost you have to have an educated public. If you have stupid people, you'll end up with stupid leaders.

The Ukrainians are some of the most educated people in the world, but they have some of the worst government.

Not totally in agreement here Ted; I'm not stupid but I really don't know enough about government to pick a leader and would do so on superficial qualities and image. Likewise, I too go for the simplistic slogan solution - none of us have time or inclination to spend hours, days, weeks studying in order to become properly informed.

I do know about music, entertainment, the judicial system, some level of the education system, food, sex...

On all those my opinion would probably be worth hearing and considering; I'm informed in those areas.

But in most others, it's simply uninformed opinions; some right; some wrong.

I've said many times - a benign autocracy; ruled by time changes as everyone (Ben Ali, Mubarak, Gaddafi, Thatcher, Blair) starts with good intentions but gets corrupted by power.

But democracy? No, a disaster - sounds great on paper but is quite simply basically and essentially a mistake. It's asking people who do not know to choose people they do not know to run society.

there are many places with single rulers and the people are very happy..Oman for one and what about the Sultan of Brunei...everyone is looked after.

so much better than messy elections !

and Tonga where the King has ultimate power and is 'advised ' by the leaders of the ruling families..everybody happy !

I guess I should be more specific in what I mean by an educated public. You can have people who are educated enough to build bombs but not educated to understand why building bombs is a bad idea. I don't know enough about the Ukrain educational system to know what kind of knowledge it is that they are learning. That's a big part of it.

Not totally in agreement here Ted; I'm not stupid but I really don't know enough about government to pick a leader and would do so on superficial qualities and image.

You probably don't know anything about flying a plane or dentistry either but it's not hard to pick out when somebody else doesn't either. If they do a good job, you know they're qualified. As long as the plane isn't hitting the ground, you know that the pilot knows how to fly a plane. In the same way, if riots are breaking out on the streets and people are losing their homes then you might want to ask why the government isn't able to fix these problems.

Exactly but sadly the "choice" is eventually up to us and we all - well, almost all - go by the image and the simple slogans; Tony Blair (who I not only voted for but met personally and spoke to at length when he was Shadow Home Secretary at a Springsteen gig with a mutual friend) is the perfect example of a modern image being a disaster.
