About a year ago I got really annoyed by my unattractive habit of biting my fingernails. I mean, look at Gordon Brown. So I stopped.
No problem. Just didn't do it anymore.

But now I find a crucial ingredient in my personal hygiene pack is an emory board - I keep chipping or breaking or catching a nail on something and grab a little strip (thank god - given free by all the hotels I stay in) to file it back to shape.

Anyone else go through this? I keep little boards everywhere; by my seat, in the car, next to bed... And if I'm without one - HELL!

I use a file to keep mine down to the right length. At first I had to squeeze a little rubber ball if ever I felt the urge to have a nibble, and I often found myself slipping of the wagon. One school of thought is that if you weren't breast fed as a baby you're more likely to bite your nails or smoke. I think my problem was anxiety which also manifested itself as shaking and twitching, whether excited or anxious.

I can say that one of things that annoys me more than anything is when a nail cracks or breaks and I begin to snag it on material etc..drives me insane.

I keep clippers and emery boards in my car in case it happens while out.

Any time I can I have professional manicure I do..the most luxurious thing

I've been filing my nails since I was very young and my very butch older brother's friends used to comment about it when they saw this 10 year old in a flowing dressing gown in the living room languidly slumped in an arm chair filing away with an emery board.
