TOPIC: Toff
#74749
Toff 12 Years, 7 Months ago
I got called a "Toff" yesterday. I didn't know that word was still used. I told the peasant that he was a protozoa but he seemed to think I was swearing. It was quite funny actually.

Maybe the 'peasant' was puzzled by the plural form of protozoon.

Actually it's meant to say protozoan but the final (n) was missed off. Protozoan, like protozoon, is acceptable.

Yes really .. the use of protozoan has changed as language changes over time, but it's not really worth wasting effort on.

Which is worse; a toff, a peasant or a pedant?

'Toff,' as far as I'm aware, has usually been a term of mild affection. Ian Carmichael was often cast as a toff. I certainly think a toff is someone from the upper classes who'd never dream of calling someone else a peasant. That's my only gripe.

Some people don't get my sense of humour, but they are the reason why I have a sense of humour.
