I do love a good pedant Pru. I spend most of my time watching TV and wincing at the quantity of split infinitives!

Speaking as a linguist (not that that makes me an authority on anything) I have no problem with split infinitives or the title of this thread. Fluidity in word order is great, as it allows you to shift the emphasis in a sentence by shifting words around.

If we're going to fix our language in stone we might as well have our own equivalent of the Academie Francaise and stop our language from evolving.

But don't get me started on your/you're, their/they're etc... grrrr!
