Greece - loony la-la land ! 12 Years, 6 Months ago
They've got no money
They are in debt up to their eyeballs
... so they go on strike !!!

What for?
Do they expect the money fairy to descend and give them something ?

We could never be so silly here, could we?

(TUC plans "day of action" in November - "Four unions balloted in the summer and held a one-day strike on June 30. Ten more announced ballot plans at the TUC conference last week.

The TUC plans to hold a day of action on November 30, in what Mr Barber has called the "biggest mobilisation of industrial action for a generation". FROM - news.sky.com/home/politics/article/16075281

all together now .... OH YES WE COULD !!!

Whether a single currency is a good or bad idea is debatable (and a separate subject) - the point is the Greeks would be up s-creek no matter what currency they used as they have "spent" more than they have earned !

In The Know-you really miss the point every time.

The reason Greeks are going on strike is for the exact same reason people marched in Britain and why they are occupying Wall Street at present.

Trying to get the message across that the bankers blew it in Greece as well, got bailed out by the taxpayer (with no obligation) and now the taxpayer is expected to bear the fucking pain because of a situation not of their making.

For God's sake, pay attention.

and stop sounding so delighted the Greek nation is going through a trauma..their dramas could well become yours.

The difference ITK is that in a single currency one bad country can take the others down with it.
Do you think the other members of the euro would be putting up all this money for Greece,Portugal et al if they still had their own currencys? No of course not,we had a lucky escape, had we have listened to the Looney Libs our economic problems would have been far worse.
The eurozone is a complete mess, because they put ideals before reality, time for a change?

Exactly. It is the banks that have been bailed out, not the Greek people. Misreporting on a grand scale.

Can someone reign this fool in? ITK says he is a Christian or religious he sounds like those nice
people from the Westboro Baptist Church. He seems to delight in other peoples misery and as such
needs a good talking to. Get your stupid head out of your ass you imbecile and talk some common
sense instead of the nonsense you're spouting. Veritas is spot on. People are fed up of bearing
the brunt of greedy bankers mistakes.

No, my dear veritas - it is YOU who always manages to miss the point !

My question was "WHY are they on strike?" What do they hope to achieve ? (apart from driving their country further down the pan).

They cant get the cuts reversed - there is no money !

They can achieve absolutely nothing except further disruption (no wonder the loony Unions are behind it !)

THAT is the point !

Glad you agree that spending money you cannot pay back is a bad idea (whichever currency it happens to be !)

The eurozone is a complete mess, because they put ideals before reality, time for a change?

The problem is overspending - not the relevant currency !

Why is Greece in trouble?

Greece has been living beyond its means in recent years, and its rising level of debt has placed a huge strain on the country's economy.

The Greek government borrowed heavily and went on something of a spending spree after it adopted the euro.

Public spending soared and public sector wages practically doubled in the past decade.

However, as the money flowed out of the government's coffers, tax income was hit because of widespread tax evasion.

When the global financial downturn hit, Greece was ill-prepared to cope.

It was given 110bn euros of bailout loans to help it get through the crisis - and has now been earmarked to recieve another 109bn euros.

But many fear that will not be enough.

Any of this sound familiar, Veritas ?

"living beyond its means" ... "rising level of debt" ... "public spending soared" ... "public sector wages practically doubled" ... this has loony Labour written all over it LOL !!!!

I think you're missing the point again ITK, and seem to have ignored my post above.

This is not Greece or the Greek people being bailed out. It is the IMF lending Greece more money to make sure the banks get paid their interest, that is all.

The IMF is in the pay of the banks and is an instrument of the US economy. Its only interest is in generating debt so the banks can earn interest. Anyone who believes they are some charitable organisation helping poor countries out is living in la la land indeed.

The father of a friend of mine in Hungary was an interpreter in the negotiations between the then Communist regime and the IMF and World Bank around the time of the fall of the Iron Curtain, and the stories I could tell about the conduct of the IMF/World Bank at that time made me lose all faith in both.

You will probably choose to ignore this post like you did my last one because it doesn't fit your version of lazy southern Europeans being scroungers.

But prod me and I may just tell a few tales.

Sorry .... I didn't realise that someone forced people to spent up to the limit (and beyond) on their credit cards (and then apply for further credit cards so they could pay off the interest on the first one) !

My mistake !!!

Glad that you agree that prompt and swift action by the Coalition government has averted most of the financial disaster.

Just image if we had listened to a load of Balls ?

Things here are tough ... but nowhere near as tough as in many other places (until, that is, the loony Unions shut-down the Country in November).

The greek financial crisis has nothing to do with ordinary citizens, but the Greek government's ability to repay debt.
Again what planet are you on?
