Reminds me of when Elton John said to me "I wasn't going to talk to you after what you said about Live Aid and then I thought Life's too short" to which I answered "Yes for the starving in Africa it is" which rather confused the poor old queen.
Beneath the 'meta-comedy' that is now the style of choice for Gervais, self-consciously playing 'the smug little man,' he still comes across as a smug little man. I quite enjoyed the show, though, in spite of him. It seems, however, like one joke repeated over and over again, so I fear for the series as a whole. (It'll probably still win him a BAFTA and an Emmy, because he seems to get those regardless of the quality of his work.)
Yes, it's interesting; my brain tells me to loathe everything about it (hated The Office; loved Extras) but I still laughed. The Liam Neeson bit was fabulous.
