Spielberg is an odd mix of the brilliant and the crass. For me his greatest triumph was and still is Close Encounters Of The Third Kind...ludicrous plot of course but the climax to that film is more than just about a large UFO seemingly rising from out of the ground and soaring majestically above Devil's Tower (quite beautiful)...it reaches out to everyone who sees it and is a celebration of life...we are not alone and we can and should be getting along with each other regardless of race, creed, colour. It's a work of genius without being overly sentimental in a crass way, and unfortunately Spielberg is very apt at the latter.
Schindler's List was just too drenched in sentimentality, as was The Color Purple and ET. Empire of The Sun was a great movie bursting to get out, but for some reason it failed in my view. It should have been epic but isn't, and I'm still not sure why, having seen it twice.
Saving Private Ryan is truly fantastic for the first 45 minutes, then it becomes probably the most boring movie of all time.
Jaws was okay.
But why is it I'm not itching to see War Horse? Where as I might have been had it been directed by anyone other than Spielberg. That remains a mystery as he is a great director, no doubt, and I still believe he will have his finest hour by creating the perfect masterpiece that will go down in history as probably the greatest film ever made.
What that will be we will have to wait and see.
Maybe he'll buy the rights to Vile Pervert!
