Why are the Olympics at Ramadan? 11 Years, 12 Months ago
I'm still not aware of why the Olympics Committee chose to hold the Games exactly at Ramadan; isn't it disgraceful for all Muslim athletes? I'm not into any religion but surely - whether or not they get dispensation to drink - it places a terribly unfair burden on Muslims taking part? Nobody in the media seems to have considered this question but it really troubles me.

I see your point JK, but there was not alot of choice !

They obviously wanted mid-summer (for best hope of weather) and as all of June is taken up by another Bank Holiday (and Betty's Jubilee !) and then the Euro Football, followed by 2 weeks of Wimbledon, a late July start was best option.

After the Olympics we still have to fit in the mong games too !

Another ignorant, but typical, comment from ITK.

Disabled people have no responsibility or culpability for their problems.

Should we just say - 'no sport/music/education for you' - a bloke called Adolf said something like that.

But sadly he included races, creeds and colours as well.

Isn't it funny how words get new meanings. I remember when gay meant full of the joys of spring, not full of the joys of springing.

I never said they did .... and they can have as many "games" as they like - as long as I am NOT paying for it !

But ... to keep pretending they are "athletes"? .... purleeze !

No - and I didn't go to the "King's new clothes" school of delusion, either !

We've had this discussion before ITK and I expressed the opinion that someone with no legs is no less an athlete than someone with both - just different.

Dread the Summer - why?

Loads of sport - dozens in the Olympics, including football.

Horse racing, tennis, golf, rowing, sailng, cricket etc. etc. - as well in the UK.

Summer in the UK is the best in the world for sport AND we can watch the Euros and the Tour de France on telly!

Only F1?

Andrew, check your sports diary. This summer, in the UK, will have the largest variety of sports in history (with the Olympics and other major events), as well as one F1 race. You don't need to watch that.

How can you say they 'only show F1' in the summer? No matter what sport you follow, it will be available - actually and/or on telly (mainly both) in the UK, this year.

Can you name ANY sport which cannot be seen - in the flesh or on TV - this summer? I can't, but I sure there's one or two!

I still think this is disgraceful but my real astonishment is that the media hasn't picked up on it; sometimes I think it's not just the music industry that's lost the plot but the entire human race.

Is it a fear of stirring things up? Being accused of reverse racism? Surely this is a front page story?

This is old news - and it was a major story in 2006, when the dates (which are affected by numerous other factors) were announced.

For instance, the Jubilee and the Euros.

I'm talking about the Summer in general Frank not just this year when football season is over.

Years in advance, the IOC and the host nation select the dates.

With teams from over 200 countries taking part in the World's biggest sporting event, tough decisions have to be made.

Only 32 teams take place in the World Cup, playing one sport.

To fit in everyone's preferences would be impossible and the Olympics have taken place during Ramadan before, without problems.

However, those who fast etc. during Ramadan will, undoubtedly, be disadvantaged.

Ok andrew. But, in a normal UK summer - after the football season - you'll also have loads of different sports:-

Horse racing/Ascot and Derby meetings etc.
Sailing/Cowes
Cricket/5 Tests
Rowing/Henley
Tennis/Wimbledon
Golf/The Open

Just six examples, all in the UK.

On TV/Abroad:-

Tennis/Grand Slams
Golf/Majors
Cycling/Tour de France
Rugby/Hong Kong 7's
Games/Commonwealth or European
Horse racing/Dubai and Melbourne

Six more, at random.

Then there's the massive US sports coverage!

And that from Europe and around the world!

Do you not have Sky and/or ESPN?

To say you dread the summer because of the lack of sport - 'only F1 !' - is complexing...

HaventAClue's View (In association with KnowItAll & DoItAll)

We wonder if ITK has passed his/her Birth-Control test, and whether some of his/her comments are censored from "Your Views" ?

Personally, in a supposed 'Free Democarcy' we don't believe in ANY censorship of ITK, nor for P.C./Political Correctness=Pure Cowardice, or for pandering to/appeasing populist media propaganda-censorship agendas, playing to the gallery for Mob Rule ratings & profit.

As for no-sport on Ramadan, what about Yom Kippur ? There are many Jews & Muslims who indulge at their 'Holy Times'.

While some Olympians and other top sport stars have low-IQs, yet some disabled folks are high-IQ geniuses like Stephen Hawking, which might beg further questions for ITK and Adolf.
