Record of the Day - Tips thread 18 Years, 6 Months ago

Interesting to see the explosion of tips over on the Record of the Day board.
Normally when they ask for tips there are about a dozen.
But this tells us a lot - good and bad.
First, there are a lot of bands and individuals making music again.
Secondly, too many tips spoil the broth... nobody with any sanity can filter through that list of dozens of names.
Thirdly, BAD thing, it's too easy to make what we used to call DEMOS. These days, with MySpace, YouTube and others, seconds after the concept arrives, so do the demos.
NOT READY!!!
So the germ of an idea dies or is suffocated by too early exposure.
So, I ask for only those who are ready to post their tips here.
None of those silly, immature, unprepared hopefuls.
No "I love the idea of limos and girls/boys with big tits" (I know a few boys who ARE big tits) "and drugs and fame, fame, gimme fame... let's invent a band and rool the charts".
We do take the time to listen on here.
It's a real nuisance when the links don't even work as they have not been thought through.
And 99% of the music is simply NOT YET READY for critical exposure.
So don't blow it. Less is more.
If and when you're ready, we can help you.
Do put links up, aim us at ONE TRACK, make sure all the information is there... most of us can only afford a minute of our valuable time.
Almost everyone important reads this board - globally.
Fewer out-of-work losers and lower down the ladder observers with time on their hands.
Why did ORSON not happen until the Tipsheet board revived?
Because they needed a window respected by those that matter.
When the Tipsheet endorses you, those who can help, and who care about great music, hear you, sit up and pay attention, and sign you, expose you, break you, market you.
They may subsequently lose you, but that's up to them!

It was very notable that on what seemed like a pretty quiet day on ROTD, that a "post your tips here", or whatever it said went like topsy.
I was pleased to see that two acts I am working with were tipped, and it wasn`t by us, which was nice.(although I did back it up later)
Without trying to upset some acts, I think a lot of them do not realise that they are actually known already and are being let down gently by nice people.
We produced an act recently, who were convinced they had now "made it", and my colleague put it so elequently to them.
He said, "if you are doing this job for that reason, you are doing the wrong job, you should be doing it for the love it."And he is absolutely right. The music and creation of music is paramount.
Hits are a pot of gold, that some achieve.
I have met and worked with so many talented musicians and people in the industry since starting to contribute to these pages.

I think calling the ROTD posters 'losers' is a bit much. Bare in mind that some posters use their real names and a patently, for all to see, not losers, Debs Wild for instance.
Yes, a lot of new posters seem to pop up whenever tips are requested, but that happens here too. I recently sifted through an obviously street teamed thread about some band or other. Can't remember the name, 'Citizen something', possibly
I lurked on both ROTD and tipsheet for months before feeling compelled to join in.
I agree that some of the tips weren't ready (not necessarily bad though) but I also had a root through and found some stuff I really liked.
Also, I think it can help a band if they get tipped before they are ready, if constructive criticism or even better, the offer of help are forthcoming. Sometimes all it needs is a good producer or manager to give some guidance.
