and insist that Pick of the Pops features music from the eighties or even 90s, you can almost hear the BBC executives in W1A... "look, let's be honest, listeners are dying off who remember the 60s - like we did with music of the 40s and 50s, we should ditch those old hits and start playing more recent oldies".
If they were people who thought that playing music with mass appeal might be good programming they would not be working at the BBC but somewhere earning decent money. Certainly not commercial radio or ITV though.

Yet their younger DJs are losing listeners. I have heard commercial radio in years but with YouTube etc I can listen to the songs I want, if I have got through money then I look at gigs for a 60s or 70s band.
So far I have only seen 80s bands live this year and boy they are fantastic to see.
I still want to see John Mayall live but missed every opportunity.
Heard that Stand Up and Rock with Bev Beathen with the dude from Rocking Berries us a treat, I don't need to hear anymore gags about insurance from Jasper Carrott again but he is great on guitar.

It's that standard broadcasting strategy, 'selling ice cream in winter'. Stick a show that many people still like in a really bad slot, then note the audience fall, and then decommission it. That's what they did with TOTP, instead of doing that really tiresome thing of working harder to improve the show, and that's what they're doing now with SOTS.
