TOPIC: UK Eurovision 2019
#189198
UK Eurovision 2019 1 Month, 1 Week ago
I'm certain Australia will win. Iceland will do well (my friends there are with the Icelandic legation - lovely people). Sweden is decent. But for me the surprise great entry is... the UK. Why? Because since my era as Executive Producer (where we won in 1997; had the best ever entry in 1996 and came second in 1998) our standards have slipped and this year the song is very average but Michael Rice is a surprisingly excellent singer. Indeed, if we don't win I'd be keen to produce a Number One smash for him (whichever label he's on - pay attention; I'm available again now, after being acquitted of being a Vile Pervert at Southwark Crown Court in 2018).

I am enjoying all of it so far.
I am not sure what Russia's singing in the shower is about?

I really don't get the enthusiasm for the Netherlands song - it sounds like a pleasant Ed Sheeran B side to me. Wait until you see Australia, Honey.

I need to survive this bloody Greek song first! Ouch.

WOW. Australia have it, I hope. What a fabulous performance.
They must have cast iron stomachs though. If that had been me singing I'd have thrown up on the audience.

What what what! Congrats JK, after over 15 years of Hell you’re free! By the way you were so wrong about the UK and Australia Eurovision performance. UK last but Australia did very well.

Indeed I still think Australia deserved to win on performance. Good show though; a higher standard of songs.

I lost interest in the winning song half way through. Amy Winehouse sang a much better song about love being a losing game.

My thoughts on Eurovision - as I always said; if there's not a Real Hit in there, anything could win. Tonight was a prime example. There was no REAL hit - some, like Netherlands and Italy, could do quite well on the charts, get decent streaming, check up millions of You Tube views and so on - all easily done for reasons not connected with a Real Hit. Past smashes like that odd Korean track and Macarena can even get big sales (in the past; these days downloads and streaming) but they were not Real Hits - example of mine - Who Let The Dogs Out? Technically a novelty song but a Real Hit (people are still singing it). I like the new voting system; it shows how something that has no hope (Northern Macedonia) can be loved by "Juries" but won't get any "people" votes. Ditto Sweden. Yet populist sounds (Norway) can do well, as can good performances (Australia; Iceland).

If I was running the UK Eurovision (I am still available BBC - once we've dumped that ghastly Lord Hall Hall - previous DG Mark Thompson brought me back into the fold) I'd keep Michael Rice as next year's entrant and find him a decent song to win with. He'd have to lose a little weight though.

And just for interest - the entry I prepared for the UK - sadly "too late" - do you think it would have done better?

Whoever did his wardrobe would need to be fired before I would let him near a stage again!
He is a normal nice looking boy, but his haircut was horrid and (for TV) his too tight jeans made him look distractingly porky.

With really good production-yes!

Shall we all write one for next year and have our own competition here?

Had an interesting chat with an old customer of mine. He was on the sauce for decades, but is now sober.

We discussed Eurovision - his opinions were the UK are too predictable and crap. UK needs to have an outlandish heavy metal band. He never understood why Germany didn't use Scorpions or Kreator.

I said to him what about the Irish ? He said Waylander.
