TOPIC: Favorite rock films of all time

Favorite rock films of all time 18 Years, 1 Month ago
I saw "Velvet Goldmine" again recently and every time I see it I am dazzled by what an accurate and wonderful snapshot of the 70's and glam rock it is.
I think it is definitely my favorite rock film of all time. Though I still love "Privilege" with Paul Jones,
"Stardust" with David Essex and "Grace of My Heart"and
of course "The Commitments"...what an amazing film.
I also really like "8 Mile".
Which rock films do you think are the best?

I think I'll go with you Martin... 18 Years, 1 Month ago
though I ought to back my own Rocky Horror Show... but the stage show was a million times better than the film.
Interesting that very few music films included any good music.

I used to agent for a band that used to play songs from "Rocky", without even having to do the stage show, and the songs stood up well, when this project moved over to the songs from "Grease", there really was only the two obvious songs that people wanted to hear. I deliberately did not put The Blues Brothers, or the Commitments in my list, a, because they are technically soul films, and b, because the music was so lifted from the brilliant original tracks , as to form a "tribute act genre".
Granted , in the former, there were some wonderful cameos, and Belushi and Ackroyd were fantasticly funny, but unfortunately for music in the long run , the film does have a lot to answer for.
"The Doors", was allways going to be a good film, as the pre-production, was so long. In 1978, it was widely rumoured that John Travolta would be playing Morrison, this outcome would have been interesting to say the least.

"8 Mile": surprisingly good!
"Rattle & Hum", although I'm not sure it qualifies as a movie.
"Commitmments", favourite line: "They'll be eating crisps out of your knickers".
"Quadrophenia"

Which moves us on to, Best Songs in Rock Films of All Time... 18 Years, 1 Month ago
..Also it`s worth mentioning, how good James Stewart was as Glen Miller, and the Elvis documentary, "Thats the Way it Is", is fantastic.
5.Stardust
4.Summer Nights
3.Your the One That I Want
2.Stonehenge (Spinal Tap)
1.The Time Warp.

These are not my own favourites, but I think their influence on how people put shows/bands together is pinnacle.
It`s a chicken and egg thing, obviously every Beatles song should be on the list, but the films were made FOR the music, and not the music for the films.

Almost famous is often overlooked but I think it's a pretty decent (if a little schmaltzy) movie.

also love the high fidelity, if that counts?

I havent seen that one so I can`t comment myself.
Interesting comment earlier, about "Rattle And Hum " too, I did enjoy the film at the time, but it is`nt one of the greats, and I do like watching the clips, but I couldn`t eat a whole one twice!
"High Fidelity", brilliant of course, I feel an idiot for not putting that one in, purely, as the whole thing was based on guys making rock lists! Doh!

Mine has to be The Wall by Pink Floyd, an excellent film and Bob did a good job on the singing front!

I also love Velvet Goldmine and one of my neighbours was the boy who was taken "advantage" of! Strange that he had to wait 4 years before he could see the film he was in seeing as it was an 18!

I disagree JK
The soundtrack for "Stardust" had some fabulous music, including the original songs by Dave Edmonds.
"Rock and Roll High School" had a really good score...
"Grace Of My Heart" had some really beautiful songs, though not current rock very indicative of the Brill Building days.
"The Commitments" cd's were very good, the actors sang
the songs with great energy and were a lot of fun to listen to.
and since many included "Help" and "Hard Day's Night"
you can't say this wasn't good music.

Nobody has mentioned "La Bamba". Los Lobos, did a fantastic job on the soundtrack, I am starting to feel this list could be endless......"School of Rock", is highly enjoyable as well, although the songs are not that good, it does represent a failed rock star trying to get along very well.
I can`t remember the name of the prequel to "Stardust", and I was too young to see it at the time and so I read the book. Ringo Star played Adam Faiths part originaly.
I would love to see somebody`s film version of "On The Road", by Kerouak.
Has there been one?
