Watching (and, yes, listening) to the Friday 31st Dec Top of the Pops show I could not hear one mass appeal crossover hit song. Now this could be because I'm old - 77. At 17 I loved Buddy Holly, Beatles, Roy Orbison, Gene Pitney and thought Frank Sinatra was shit. But I really like Ed Sheeran and his new Shivers is awful. Is it me? Or is it the current crop of executives in music? Or is it the talent - it's so easy now to get recorded and released, before any constructive filtering, that talent can no longer develop (vital for cross over)?
