TOPIC: Eurovision 2023

Eurovision 2023 1 Year, 2 Months ago
No; I won't be going - much though I love Liverpool and supported it for the show, I'm there often and do not need to experience Eurovision in the UK. I was there last year in Turin. And had a delightful time in that superb country. So who will be this year's UK entry? My problem with today's music industry, since I left it in 2000, is there seems to be nobody interested in MAM anymore. MAM - Mass Appeal Music. No entries in 2022 had any MA. The UK had the best entry and should have won but even that was not a Real Hit.

Mae Muller has been chosen to represent the UK; I note all the publicity has been about "which artiste" and not "which song". The contest is the Eurovision Song Contest. This has been a problem for decades and one which I fought for years. Yes it's a TV show, so the performance is vital both visually and audio. That was our problem with Gina G in 1996 with, I thought and still feel, our best ever song entry Just A Little Bit. Next year (having learned my lesson) we won with Katrina who performed and sang a less good song far better.

So we need both. But the song is vital and it must be Mass Appeal and Instant, two missing ingredients for years. But this TaP company did a great job finding Sam Ryder last year, with a decent song Spaceman (not a real hit) and a good performance. He won Eurovision 2022 until Media Hype kicked in and voters who obeyed the media instructions went for a country not the song.

That, of course, is the clever marketing and promotion way to get a hit. I suspect it won't work again but also think another marketing trick could grab the award.

Let's wait and see.

Mae's song I WROTE A SONG is OK; not great but as good as Spaceman so I reckon it stands a good chance of winning.

Well done BBC and especially TaP (whoever they are). At last the BBC seems to have found people as adequate as me in finding a decent entry.
