This really is a rather lovely intro to Top Of The Pops, a great and different version of Sugar Sugar by Sakkarin (I believe JK) only 18 months after the big number one version, and a fabulous snapshot of the youth of 1971 looking marvellous. Quite a nice way to start the show this, although the poor black and white quality of the artist photos does seem a let down.

How did this great version of Sugar Sugar come about so soon after the Archies one? Not an obvious cover so soon after the original.

I loved the original but my version was another example of how a great song can exist in a totally different genre. So pop/bubblegum was turned into rock/progressive. It worked; sold millions globally. Check out the followup - Hang On Sloopy - and watch the video by LeBoam.
