UK Eurovision WINNER has died - Martin Lee, lead singer of Brotherhood Of Man 1 Month ago
This one seems to have flown under the radar somewhat.

Martin Lee, lead singer on our winning 1976 entry for Brotherhood Of Man has passed away on 29th September after a short illness aged 77.

They were still together with the original 1976 winning line up who had all the big hits and a couple of other No1 hits right up until the present time although they stopped touring in 2020. They had even managed a minor top thirty hit album as recently as 2019, their first album to chart in almost forty years.

I saw them live as part of a package concert, they were very good for what they did. Even the younger generations were singing along.

RIP Martin.

From the band's official facebook account. Sounds like it was unexpected.

Brotherhood of Man
·
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our great friend and colleague Brotherhood of Man’s Martin Lee who slipped peacefully away on the evening of Sunday 29th September 2024 from heart failure after a short illness. Martin was 77.
Martin sang lead vocals on the1976 Eurovision Winner “Save your kisses for me” which was number 1 in 31 countries and the guinness book biggest selling eurovision single of all time plus the biggest winner by percentage of vote.
He was not only a wonderful singer but also co-wrote with band mate Lee Sheriden most of the Brotherhood of Man hits including the 3 number one records. Other awards include 26 Platinum, Gold & Silver Discs, 3 Ivor Novello awards and an ASCAP Shield for writing a top 10 hit in the United States.
He will be sadly missed by his fellow band members Nicky Stevens, Lee Sheriden and especially Sandra Stevens to whom he had been married for 45 happy years.
Over the past 50 years the four of us have toured the world together in harmony and have so many happy memories but now we are in total shock and cannot imagine a world without Martin Lee. R.I.P.

He seemed like a lovely guy and a talented songwriter, a bit cheesy for some people, but at 8 or 9 years old i loved this song and it brought another win for the uk in the Eurovision, something we have only achieved twice in the 48 years since.

He co-wrote the song with the other male member of the group and their manager I believe. Some people think that they copied Abba, but only because there were 2 wholesome boys and 2 wholesome gie of the road pop songs. They had many other hits and continued up until covid playing small theates, and butlins etc.

I saw them in a biggish theatre but they were part of the package. The tour may have been a flop because they never came down again nor did the other groups. It does seem there was money and popularity for the 1960's nostalgia package gigs. Even Paul Jones from Manfreds is still going depsite being over 80.

I think they even did things like working man clubs like Chicory Trip seems to do now or car fetes around the South East. They came and went very quickly, I wonder if they got ripped off also.

The Butlins circuit may seem corny but there is a lot of money in it, they also do attract some very big names e.g. Nazareth Echo and The Bunnymen. It's nice to see the Darts are still going on the small circuit along with David Essex.

I am shocked Racey are still going, but I have no clue how many of the original members are in the band.

I hate that most old bands have music made by keyboards/ synths with dodgy midi files. A bit like many re-recordings we were fooled into buying in the 80s and 90s. Then in the small print would say "Re-recordings using as many of the original members as possible" in the inlay cards not on the back, depending on the record label.

He actually wrote/co-wrote all their three No1 singles, so anyone who can write a hatrick of UK number one hits is in a reasonably select group. I had no idea he wrote any of them.

Their chart/record sales discography is somewhat unusual. Within a year of topping the charts twice they couldn't sell a record to save their lives, never mind kisses. The singles success suddenly died almost instantly. But even stranger, it looks like they had back to back No1 releases with Angelo (summer 1977) and then Figaro (early 1978) but between these two chart toppers they put out another single, Highwayman, which absolutely bombed and did nothing at all. There was also an album called Images out at the time of these No1 singles but the album wasn't boosted by the singles and didn't sell or trouble the charts.

Backing track Robbie. The other bands played with their instruments.
