Join the queue Andy - I managed it a decade ago with Alex Day but even then it was almost impossible and only worked because Alex spent 20 hours in every 24 doing the job (Forever Yours got to #4).
I remember the zombie music video going viral, JK. However, it seems to have been forgotten, like the "No Eggs in the Carton" meme.
Andrew, many musicians use Bandcamp or upload to Soundcloud, but it's very tricky. Many artists do it just as a hobby and hope they go viral.
There is a very talented singer named Tommy Strix, he is from the Midlands and has a bit of a following but never seems to reach neighbouring counties. He has tried to release his original music but it seems to come to nothing.
I’ve got a SoundCloud page that I need to update….going to look into Bandcamp too (although I’m a little foggy on how it works).
Just heard some Tommy Strix stuff …. his cover versions are really good.
Cheers
Another avenue many ambitious artists try is open mic events. Some live music venues will have an open day where bands and singers rehearse and record their stuff. Also, look for any local events that are looking for local live acts. Many local acts form networks by doing this, if you need a bass player they someone will know somebody who will probably fill the gap.
I was at a live event in Wiltshire last Summer. It was a fundraiser to support the venue and local hospice. The bill was only for regional acts, and many performed cover songs. However, many of them also performed their own material and DJ sets, which was refreshing to hear. It sounds cliche but it can work if you do door-knocking at venues that have live music, the worst thing they can say is NO. It's not what you know it's who you know.
“ This reminds me of the Hackers soundtrack. Terrible movie but awesome soundtrack”
That’s a blast from the past and the mid 90s is just about where my knowledge of music ended 🤦♂️
Couldn’t tell you who’s at number 1 at the moment.
I’m definitely trying every avenue now….got my SoundCloud and bandcamp sorted….
Don’t think I’d go down too well live but I have had a local radio station play my track so I guess it’s a start.
Good luck Andrew, getting some airplay on the radio is a good start.
When I go to coffee shops, I see students taking degrees in Music, making up their own beats, mixes, and songs on laptops using mainly software and bits of hardware.

I envy just how clued up the younger generation are….the fella that produced my track was younger than me and really knowledgeable.

Thanks Andy
When I went to the event in Wiltshire, I got talking to one of the regional bands. They admitted they overspent on their promo CD and recording sessions. The band were nothing amazing but very competent.
Everything is pretty much done on Pro Tools these days, all you paying for is the sound engineer to tinkle with the pre-recorded songs from a CD or a music file. When things were done on consoles it took time.
