EUROVISION - WE FIGHT BACK! 16 Years, 9 Months ago
Attitudes & Opinions...

Just because the BBC are too scared to beg JK to come back and save the UK Eurovision contest, there's no reason why The Tip Sheet can't find the 2009 Winner, is there?
So we proudly announce - the Tip Sheet contest to find the Eurovision 2009 Champion, which we shall then offer to any country with the desire, courage and initiative to want it.

Remember - we ran the UK contest in the years that produced Love City Groove, Oooh Aaah Just A Little Bit, Yodel In The Canyon Of Love - which came second in the national contest for the 1997 UK entry which was - Love Shine A Light, the most points winner ever in Eurovision at that time.

These days there are no restrictions on the nationality of either performers or writers, so obscure, tiny countries are quite welcome to acquire our suggested entries, with or without the artistes, to put forward as their national entry.

So our first suggestions are... WHAT'S A GIRL TO DO? by GLORIA GORGEOUS
www.kingofhits.co.uk/content/view/753/47/
and

MARY MY LOVE by JONATHAN KING.

We invite tipsters to submit their own compositions and tracks for consideration in the Tip Sheet approval lists. All our selected sounds will be put up on YOU TUBE.

Love shine a light was fairly a good song, but our other entries which you listed were rather awful.

The beauty of music is that it will always be different strokes for different folks Al.

And whatever we may think of certain tracks, the goal is to win.

Although Just A Little Bit only came 8th, I think the fact it sold millions around the world, topped the UK chart and was top 5 in the USA supports my personal feeling that it, and not Katrina's winner, was my best Eurovision entry.

Would you consider performing Mary My Love yourself, JK? I'd love to see the BBC have to announce you as Andorra's (for example) singer on the night!

By the way, all countries operate their own rules. Some will put restrictions on nationality, some won't.

I'd be deighted to sing it myself but suspect it might do better if sung by a dishy young stud!

I'm sure Andorra has many of them to spare (must go there!).

The problem that you will always get with that number is the range that it requires for the key change, you are probably going to have to lower the key, it is very much your own key on the record.

And add the fact that I was much younger when I sang it... although in the video it's more recent me (you can't SEE the key change!).

Dear old Mart - who hated this one to start with but became converted!

Strangely enough I'd have thought it an instant rather than a grower.
It goes to show you never can tell... c'est la vie said the old man...

By the way, the melody and delivery was influenced by my then great friend Steve Giorgio (Cat Stevens) and his Father And Son (low voice; high voice)...

I disagree. I expect the contest will be overloaded with young studs next year after Dima Bilan's win.

JK doing some sort of outrageous stage performance would be a far better lure for those phone voters, not so sure about the juries though, now they have been re-introduced.

I`m not worried about the juries if they are as anonymous as they used to be, if it turns into the X Factor style of jury, the show will be horrific.
I don`t like the "perfection" to be middle of the road that they seek on that show at all and people seem to have forgotten that the original ethic of Eurovision is to make "a song for Europe".

Surely this ethic meant that we should be singing an anthem for us all after the contest, as in "Waterloo", how much of Europes` history and a love song could one have blended to write that lyric that all the nations can understand?(a bit..)

Very few of us sing the song that won the contest the day after the show, which to me proves that it is not working.

Now, I`m not playing devils advocate here and I do like the "Mary" song now, but I do believe that by using a proper noun in a song for Europe is not the way forward, the only way to involve all the nations is to involve them , not only lyrically but musically.

It is of note , that the Russian area entries have started a closed unit against the UK singing entrants.
This is just desserts as the UK originally did this by making all think that they had to sing in English to get anywhere.
The UK should at least be sending fun songs, last year we just sent B sides up for offer, certainly no anthems for Europe.

It was of interest that the jury in the Eurovision Dance Contest was comprised of dance experts, somewhat X-Factor style, though they weren't given a very big part. In the end the public vote completely overruled their marks in any case.

It has not yet been made clear what the EBU has in mind for the juries in the song contest. My guess is that each competing nation will have an anonymous jury and given a 50-50 status with the phone votes. Just a complete guess mind.

I don't think there will ever be a right thread to throw that in!

Am I the only who thinks 'Mary My Love' owes a little too much to 'Band On The Run'?

It was written before Band On The Run, as it happens.
