Just seen United 93 - Film of the Year and possibly the decade... 17 Years, 11 Months ago
Stunning, distressing, exhausting and quite superb.
Not one "obvious" filmatic ploy.
Please go and see it... and then lie down for half an hour afterwards.
I was literally unable to speak.

I'm curious to see the Oliver Stone Film "World Trade Center" coming out this summer. I didn't feel ready
to see "United 93". Not sure why.

I actually think United 93 could be the best film ever made... 17 Years, 11 Months ago
it is so powerful, so effective and so simple.
You cannot blink.
And at the end you remain seated for some time.
As I left the kids opening the doors looked at me and said "Amazing".
I found I could not speak.

just watched the trailers and it does look a good movie and so this weekend I'm seeing Da Vinci Code; then I might go and see United 93.

I think movies are getting better at the moment though a lot of them are crap teen comedies.

I won't bother .... and I suspect most others won't either. 17 Years, 11 Months ago
a Hollywood-ised "version" of events? Don't we get enough of that from the Bush admin already???

Pity that John Wayne is dead !!!

No, that's why it's so superb ITK; I suspect you'll love it... 17 Years, 11 Months ago
not Hollywood-ised at all.
Made by Paul Greengrass who made Bloody Sunday.
Trust me; you'll be staggered.

I think the duff film of the year could be the re-make, of the re-make, of a re-make of "Titanic", which is a re-make of "The Poseiden Adventure".Hmmm.
I do hope nobody ever re -draws "Snow White ", having said that I bet somebody has, and it sank into obscurity, in a very ship like manner.
Does anybody not think that "United 93", has been made to early, or that , not only is it a Hollywood version of events , but a Whitehouse "let`s stop the conspiracy theoriests" movie?

If anything it's anti-Bush but actually it's just an incredibly effective film... 17 Years, 11 Months ago
I think it could be Robin Hood and it would still be extraordinary; it's not the content but the effect that is incredible.
Nobody ever says they hate Phil Spector's productions because they don't like girl groups.

Actually a good Phil Spector film would be great 17 Years, 11 Months ago
I saw a bio pic recently, and it was fascinating, but it didn`t really get into his personality, and jumped from the sixties hits to the court case, and missed out anything to do with the Beatles or the Ramones etc.
There is some good stuff on Spector in the Sonny Bono film, which I think is an HBO movie.
And suddenly I pause in writing, as Jimmy Pursey has just appeared on TV again!

.. at the Q awards, and then shook hands with BB King. I'm not normally star-struck, but I was that day.

Aha ! A further starstruck story.... 17 Years, 11 Months ago
I had some gigs in Hamburg, and on two of the shows, Scotty Moore (Presley guitarist), was on the bill.
Scotty is my mates hero, who was not on the tour but in the UK at the time. I plucked up courage, and asked Scotty, if he would not mind using my phone, and say "Hi Carl, it`s Scotty Moore here ringing from Germany..!"
Mr Moore(lovely chap), agreed to this stunt, and guess what?
Carl wasn`t in, and had no answerfone!
We were only talking about this last week, and I think he finally believes me now!
I do love on the road stories, perhaps we should start another thread.

I went to see the DaVinci Code the weekend it came out
and really liked it despite the mediocre reviews. Doing things ass-backwards as always I read the book afterwards and discovered (apart from the last ten pages) that it is a REALLY accurate version ... now that is unusual. I would have understood the end better if they had left it intact. Remember, I didn't read it first, so it made little sense to me.
Anyway, it was a good follow-up film to "Mission Impossible III" - more analytical less explosions.
But back to the World Trade Center movies.
I think the problem for me is I live in NYC and was home (unemployed) watching it live on tv that morning...I actually was supposed to have a job interview right across the street and decided not to go. I think that being here might be part of the reason it's hard to consider "entertainment."

I watched it live without realising what I was seeing, well full of panicked phonecalls from a colleague who knew his secretary was in the building.
I know I will see this film, but I will never forget what a horrible day it was. My mates sec, got out fine and well.

Yes it is ... but it is a Hollywood movie - made (primarily) for a US audience.

However, JK says its worth watching so I'll give it a shot.

Last film that did this for me was the flabbergasting "Downfall", about the last days in Hitler's bunker. Again, the subject itself meant many people stayed away - wrongly in my opinion. It is also a stunning piece of movie-making that gives you plenty to mentally chew over on the way home.

But while we're recommending fact-based movies, don't forget to check out Ken Loach's "The Wind That Shakes the Barley". As it is a British film it will only be in the cinemas for about 10 days if yuo're lucky.

I went to an independent screening last night.. 17 Years, 11 Months ago
..Absolutely hilarious film based on "The Kraken Wakes", by John Wyndham(notably not a hilarious book!).
It is great to see the talent in young film makers up and coming in the UK, and this is well worth promoting in this forum.
A lot of great, and some awful short films are available on You Tube, but this was the first major work I had seen by the contributors to a community such as that.
I spoke to the director before the showing, as I am not into horror films, and he assured me that when the monster appeared, I would be very scared indeed.
When the monster, did finally appear, after much tension, I do not think I have ever seen so many people fall of their seats, laughing at the same time.
One minute we were watching a tribute to The Blair Witch, the next, a very bad edition of Blakes 7.
This was one of those nights that was on the calender, in which you look at the date and try to think of an excuse not to go, and then you haul yourself there and have a very good time.
Was it David Attenborough that said "The Brits are coming"?
With independent film making of this quality, they have never been away.

Okay you got my attention. My very favorite film of
ALL time is still "Village of the Damned" vintage 1961.
It made me a John Wyndham fanatic. However, when I flew
over to my bookshelf now to find a copy of "The Kraken
Wakes" I couldn't find it. What was this one about?
And did it ever have another name as some of his books did have multiple names.
Nice (even if it was crap) that people are still doing his stories. I'm still trying to find a copy of a tv
version of "Consider Her Ways"...a great feminist piece.

I have a feeling that at least one of Wyndhams books was re-titled for the US market, and it may well have been "Kraken", into "Village of the Damned". I no longer have a collection of , what were ,John Wyndham Penguin Classics over here. Either way, the film I saw last night was, of course about a demon being awoke, a genre which goes back through many a book.(Is Village of the Damned, the one in which the children were poisoned? not sure)
The Kraken(demon) awaking, should have course, be today(06-06-06), but oddly , he, enough doesnt seem to be getting up for a cup of tea, or even a a bowl of Cheerios.
Without writers such as the aforementioned, and HG Wells, Arthur C Clarke, Phillip K Dick, we would not even have The X Files.
