Arctics win Mercury; deserved? 17 Years, 8 Months ago
My personal feelings are... I loved Dancefloor; I like their sound; but I found the album very much "more of the same" with about 3 or 4 very good tracks and the rest all similar filler.
But the Mercurys always were a non event; there are NO ALBUMS, just collections.
We're in a different world.

I think it was deserved but..... 17 Years, 8 Months ago
...I don`t own the album as I don`t like it. Interesting point about "collections" as opposed to albums. This has surely been caused by the lack of development deals, which has turned into a search of bands back catalogues, to see what else they have recorded in the past.
"Collections", no, I prefer "stocking fillers".
Morrisey makes albums, they are themed, as are Coldplay`s, and the acts with the most money.
The problem is, that with the advent of Myspace etc, when the acts are signed, there is "enough music recorded for an album".
I miss the album that was recorded in two weeks in Paris etc. It`s becoming rare.

Collections is the way to go for the moment. The whole market is geared towards this. With a few hits under the belt and then you can rehash collection after collection. Look at the Everly Brothers. I don't think i have ever listened to a proper album of theirs. Rather i have listened to and bought a number of collections.

It wasn't a vintage year, and Kate Bush should have won it, and if they allowed Mark Lanegan then they surely should have allowed Scott Walker.

However, the Richard Hawley album looks like it might go top ten next week so I'm pleased about that. His was definitely the best album on that list, though I suspect probably not up JK's street tastewise.

I love the Kate Bush album, but it is vaguely flawed in it`s own way.(arguably great albums are)
It took a long time to record and it shows, however, it is a concepted album,in the traditional sense and not a collection of songs.

It's a lovely record; he writes and sings about Sheffield also, but from the perspective of the Arctic Monkeys' more sober uncle, let's say; retro in an end-of-Scarborough-pier Chris Isaak way, but with quite a bit of Morrissey and Nick Lowe in there as well.
