Why on earth won't media ask this? 3 Years, 3 Months ago
1) Why have so many countries had so low a death rate from Covid19?
2) Why has Peru got so much worse a rate?

So far as I can see the media haven't asked any difficult questions since this all started.

This is what I'd love an answer to...

For anyone with the life left in them to care....

Contains a clear summary and many facts illuminating what a few of us on here having been saying since the start all those months ago...

In summary that lockdown is 10 times more harmful than the virus itself and we should concentrate on sensible measures to protect the vulnerable.

the media have been asking..you just haven't read it.

I of course don't know why but I can only speak from personal experience.

Both Australia and New Zealand went into quick and strict lockdown in March when it became clear there was a pandemic,

It was very successful.

The reasons are: Oz is divided into States and state Premiers had control and were in lockstep.
New Zealand as a country has a small population no bigger than most Oz states so everything was similar.

I think uniquely, Oz & NZ are basically middle class countries where 90% of people live in cities but not in crowded conditions, certainly not compared to European standars.

Peru? Haven't got a clue.

But then my theory basically goes out the door as in India with living conditions where people are piled upon each other.you would think deaths would be 100 times bigger and certainly a lot more than the USA.
Maybe they're a hardier bunch?

The Peru link is interesting. Hedda - your thoughts on Down Under make sense but surely it is more than that. Look at Wuhan and China in general, without vaccine until recently. Of course we know media is controlled there but such a massive suppression in deaths would surely have emerged via social media? Look at most Asian countries - closer to Down Under though still miles from it (Covid 19 doesn't seem to like the sea). All with tiny death counts, like Australia & New Zealand.

The only conclusion must be that this virus is far less lethal than exaggerated by media. Most people can be treated fine. I suspect that's why two places I really worried about - prisons and refugee camps - have not had worse death rates. People get better, even if they suffer from the equivalent of really bad flu (and long tail).

could it simply be that some places have a more infectious version of the virus than others?

Yes a good question Honey. If we can get "new variants" making it worse, why not some making it better? But I suspect this cannot be the answer. It's generally agreed the Wuhan bug came to Italy (unmutated). Surely it spread from Italy around Europe (including the UK). Surely that same original virus infected Asia and Down Under (closer to China). No I think it's the way different countries treated it - faster; better protection for the vulnerable; better health care and treatment. All based on a correct reading of the virus rather than reacting to an inflated media version.

There are so many differentials it is hard to compare, but no one can now say that lockdowns prevent deaths to any significant degree - without question - and be taken seriously.

Meanwhile there is growing, alarming and irrefutable data for lockdown deaths and misery.

We need to move beyond politics now and turn this train around.

The death rates for Greece and Cyprus are also relatively low. Much boils down to diet - for the mind as well as the body.

There has been a lot of social unrest and political instability in Peru in recent years. Repeated stress reactions to news reports of political troubles and of Covid 19 can compromise immune function.

Interesting md.

And I love the recommendation towards the end that a public health campaign telling people symptoms may be in their minds "could help".

This can run alongside the ongoing state terror campaign.

In my experience making people doubt their grip on what is real never fails to reduce anxiety...!

My brother in law is a Cypriot. He's like a freak of nature - over 6ft and built like a brick shit house which is unusual for Cypriots they are normally small. However he has a very strict diet and only drinks from time to time despite being in the hospitality and booze trade.
