The McCann legal fund, Mart !

Re - Northern Rock ... the bank MAY have been solvent a few days ago, but just shows what a bit of panic can do !

In Sheffield on Saturday the queues reached all the way from The Moor to the City Hall - I thought people were queuing for concert tickets till I realised they were queuing the other way !

I feel for everyone involved in the "bank run".

It must be horrid for both frustrated bank customer(and staff) alike enough without customers being (apparently;Source Sky News),approached by Nat West staff whilst waiting.

My favourite and very English live quote,on telly, came from a little old lady in the line, who when asked why she was there, replied "My husband told me to come".

A bank 'run' is pretty dangerous stuff. I've never heard of it happening in the UK before. I remember it happened in Portugaul a long long time ago and the writer Robin Maugham lost his life savings as he was stuck in Brighton.

I'm still giving the McCanns the benefit of the doubt-but this saga is going to blow sky high and get much worse for all involved.

My favourite was another old lady, who, when asked why she was there after the Government had guaranteed everything was safe, said - "They said that about the Titanic!"

And Richard Branson has sold off his Virgin stores...

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/6998606.stm

The stores will retail as "Zavvi". Is that a crap name or what?

Queues outside Northern Rock are very long again today here in Liverpool. How long will it be before it sinks under?

If you think funding the NCCanns is a mistake, then he has countered that with a masterstroke.

He's just sold the Virgin Megastore chain and wiped his hads of it. The new owners aren't even using the Virgin name, but calling it Zavvi. Unusual as Virgin usually let new owners retain the brand - eg: Virgin Records (the label), Virgin Cola, Virgin Radio etc. You've got to wonder why they can't use the name. Is it because, like most other buy-outs of entertainment retailers - they don't stay in business long, and he doesn't want the Virgin brand tarnished?

The McCanns appoint new "spokesperson" -

and here's what you should know about their lawyer -

Northern Rock were not the first to have to borrow money from the Bank of England.

This seems to have escpaed most people's notice -

the McCanns really do have my sympathy :

1. If they didn't do it then they are getting a really rough trot.

2. If they were involved in Madeline's death and it was accident and a subsequent cover-up- I still have enormous sympathy-the stress must be absolutely frightful. I understand others would be angry about this aspect but I'd never judge how a person would act under similar circumstances. The survival instinct is so strong.

3. If they did something deliberate-like flog Madeline off to an East European slave ring (highly unlikely)I'd seriously re-think my position.

And what about Robert Murat - the first "suspect" ?
Are you happy that they would have allowed (apparently) an innocence man to take the blame?

Different problem. Barclays was caused by technical issues. Unlike Northern Rock, most of their lending is covered by investments. 75%+ of Northern Rocks loans are funded by short-term borrowing - which dried up.

There`s a great publicity angle here, which people who may have read the "strategic busking" thread would be interested in.

Guaranteed TV, perform and tell the camera crews you are about to open an account.

Poor taste, granted, but an unmissable chance for a decent wannabee.

No-Murat got a rough deal as well. Hopefully he'll make a quid out of it now.

I thought that the McCanns actually said that Murat should be considered innocent as well ??? but I may be wrong so correct me.

There is something about the McCann's manner that doesn't seem to gender sympathy..I don't know what it is but I try to put it aside. TRhat's a very similar aspect to Lindy Chamberlain.

Agreed (about their manner), veritas. This was what always made me suspicious of them.

Regarding Murat - not sure HOW the McCanns could state he was innocent? How could they know (unless of course they DID know !).

I see the Portugeuse police have arrived in Britain now the McCanns have started their "fight back" !
