On a related note. A case local to me showed several flaws (intentional or reckless) in the way cases are handled in our legal system.

A man was brought before the magistrates on charges of posessing indecent images. The magistrates considered the images and declared that the case was not too serious and could be heard by them. The defendant, on pleading not guilty, elected to have his case heard before the Crown Court.

On the following hearing, to select a date for the trial, the Clerk to the Court read into the record that the Magistrates had decided the case was too serious for them and had ordered it to be heard at Crown Court. A total falsehood, lapped up by the attending media.

Two of the images were of a sexual nature, and the defendant refuted knowledge of them. The others were of semi naked children with no sexual content. The defence barrister informed the prosecution that they had an expert witness who could testify that the two more serious images may not have been placed on the computer by the defendant. They could easily have been placed after the computer had been taken into police custody. The prosecution offered a deal where charges relating to the two serious images would be dropped if the defendant pleaded guilty to at least three of the others. The defendant agreed and recieved a
