Now I'm at risk of offending the Welsh here, so let me make myself clear.

I'm all for the promotion of minority languages. It is genuinely one of my passions. I studied linguistics in my youth and still regard it as a hobby. Welsh language TV programmes and the like? All for it!

Is there any need for all signs in Wales to be bilingual? Any need for government departments to spend money on allowing the public to conduct their spoken and written communication in Welsh? I don't think so.

To the best of my knowledge, the last Welsh monoglot died in the 1970's. A waste of public money surely.

I'm all for allowing the Welsh to keep their language alive, and the same applies to the Cornish, but I'm not really sure what use it is outside of Wales. Beyond preserving a local tradition, and maybe fascinating a few tourists, there isn't a lot of point to it.

I`m with you here Anthony, we will learn more languages by road signs not being bi-lingual.
