BUT ... as someone on the radio recently commented; in this multi media age we know that anything broadcasted, even to a select audience, gets relayed to a much wider audience via other media such as the internet. It's more about self regulation than about station policy. And this wasn't just a bad joke told in private; it was reckless abuse of an individual which, everyone should know, will have consequences.

The Hitler comment is frankly stupid, as such comments generally are.

That's probably what they said in Germany in the 30s, Zoo.

Horrors start as minor hiccups.

What was the "unelected media source" that lead to Hitler becoming Chancellor?

To became Chancellor, Hitler used the leaders of the industry (who thought they were using him). The "free" press", especially the newspapers controlled by Alfred Hugenberg, helped him a lot.

Among the first things the nazis did when they got the power was to seize control of the "meeedjah" (4. October 1933) - newspapers, radio & film, to get their messages across.

Hugenberg and the DNVP supported Papen.

No, I believe JK is spot on here.

The point is, people have been whipped up into a frenzy about a very trivial matter, simply because a newspaper has told them to. I have detected no such widespread indignation at the state murder of an innocent Brazilian electrician, presumably because no newspaper has told us to be offended by this. Incidentally, I wonder which grandfather is feeling the most distressed right now. Sachs or de Menezes' grandfather?

Such incidents suggest that we have a society unable to think for itself, in which case we are wide open to Nazism or indeed any other form of suppressive influence.

Exactly Anthony.
Zoo, it's a different time and a different world.

But let us not ignore the similarities in situation.

Even though we are not downtrodden and defeated, as the Germans were, but we are going into a time of hardship and stress, where the envy of the wealthy is an easy itch to scratch.

Just because the enemies are not this time described as big nosed and circumcised or gay or gypsy, it is a perfect time for monsters to be created or inflated and we are watching the mass meejah do it.

Some devils will be trivial, some will be subtle, some attacks will be clever, others will be foolish but I sense the work of bullies here, Zooloo, and some of them are more bright than others.

Exactly. Which is why crying wolf over imaginary Hitlers is extremely foolish.

I do hope you're right Zoo; I would sleep better if I believed we're actually in a healthy and positive society.
