Clunes turned down Dr Who 15 Years, 3 Months ago  
It appears that Martin Clunes turned down the chance of becoming Doctor Who, if this link is to be believed. Apparently the beeb couldn't afford him. I don't think Clunes would have made a good Dr Who. I can't stop thinking of him playing a slobbish bloke on 'Men behaving badly'.

He might actually have been quite good. I was never a fan of his but was impressed with his performances in Doc Martin Goodbye Mr Chips.

Clunes actually appeared in the series in the 1980s and was very, very good. I think he is actually very posh in real life.
