I remember a kids TV show in the 70s called "You Must Be Joking", presented by a young Pauline Quirk and featuring the band Flintlock. In one of the sketches a white couple said to their black son, "We thought we should tell you where you came from." The boy replied, "Oh it's ok we learned all about that at school." The father then said, "No, it's not that, you see .. we got you off the back of a jam jar." I think the father was played by Jim Bowen. No complaints at all back then.
Pauline Quirke and Jim Bowen, eh? Of course, they then went on to found a major UK DIY retailer!
@BR- I do think Thatcher caused an awful lot of damage. It was on her watch that the politics of "Me Me Me" started to prevail, ripping the soul out of our country. This unfettered greed has now reached its culmination in total economic destruction. I do agree with all your points about Nu Labour. They have continued where Thatcherism left off, and added state interference and the dismantling of civil liberties for good measure. And don't get me started on Jackboot Jacqui. I agree with every word you say about her.

Which brings us back to Carol Thatcher saying that the tennis player looked like a "very huggable golliwog". Obviously not said with malice.
'One Show' insiders claim that she was referring to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. So far there seems to have been no response from him, and the reactions are from people taking offence on his behalf whether he does or not. If it turns out that he is not offended, then for others, who are not black, to take offence in his place smacks of racism in itself.
Rather like the Prince Harry incident. Harry's Asian friend was not offended, just others who thought that he should be. Then it was revealed that the largest online Pakistani community calls itself paki.com, and several white turned whiter, apasrt from those which turned red.
So .. let's wait until we hear whether the person Carol Thatcher was refering to is offended of not. If they are not then, as this was said off-air in a private conversation, we have no right to be. It's nothing whatsoever to do with us. However, how the BBC behaves has much to do with us because it is publicly funded. If this comment had been broadcast, that would have been different.
