TOPIC: Simpsons and Channel 4

Simpsons and Channel 4 15 Years, 2 Months ago
A few episodes ago, Channel 4 edited the main punchline out of a Simpsons episode because it showed Marg deciding to keep a gun rather than throw it away.

Tonight, in the episode where Homer goes to put his name down for sanitation inspector and is told he's in the line where people register as sex offenders, they cut out the reference to sex offenders.

Seems that Channel 4 are now PC-ing The Simpsons.

After all this time, I have to wonder why.

One can only wonder what Matt Groening himself would make of this.

However. I do think it is criminal that considering the shows popularity, and how much money Channel 4 paid for it that Channel 4 are censoring it for reasons best known to themselves. As far as I'm concerned, you don't f*** around with shows like this. Show it complete or not at all.

And BTW - I don't even like this show!

unlike you Elliott.I worship The Simpsons !

I actually went to a launch party when the show was first about to be shown..watching the episode they broadcast during the shindig I thought "what the f**k is this all about ?"

I've still go the little Simpsons bag they gave us went I left..now I've grown to love the show and never tire of it..

I reckon The impsons is one of the most subversive Tv shows ever produced.

The day they start censoring it..well we really have a problem

When the first Simpson t shirts were produced a lot of the childrens ones had "Im Bart Simpson, Who The HECK are you".Why oh why is HELL now a rude word?.The Simpsons has always been censored by TV networks round the world. It was banned in Venezuela and attempts were made to ban it in Russia.Matt Groening himself would not be at all surprised. The commentaries on the DVD releases quote numerous examples of network interference most notably in the episode where Bart says all the "Hells" I believe the network allowed nine and nine only and the production team had to fight for that. For more examples of censorship nonsense take a look at the excellent Melon Farmers website. Whats really odd is that C4 allows racist claptrap from the Goody creature on Big Brother but snips a cartoon cos it mentions sex offenders. Very odd and rather worrying.

I also noticed the new censorship. They have been showing these episodes in an endless loop for a few years now, without editing them. Maybe they got a new Nanny style producer.

In yesterdays, the joke after Homer was told that this was where people came to register as a sex offender was that Mo came in and complained that there was always a queue. They left Mo's bit in, but it was meaningless without the previous line.

A punchline is no good without the build up, and the build up is useless without the punch line. If this is the way forward, they may as well pull The Simpsons from their schedule.

And may I also point out that the BBC are even more guilty of PC censorship?

There is one episode of "Are You Being Served?" where they host a German week. That had two or three scenes removed for the DVD release. These scenes did have mild references to do with the war and the Nazis, but good old Auntie won't let us see it any more as it was made and broadcast. One or two episodes of "Steptoe and Son" also had cuts made to them on DVD because of similar subject matter.Yet the uncut versions were obviously permissible when released on VHS tape...

Funny then they allow the infamous Fawlty Towers episode to be released and repeated uncut... How many times have the BBC shown the clip of Cleese goose stepping? Loads. No. That's not racist or un-PC in their eyes but a lot of other milder stuff is.

The BBC will never repeat "The Black and White Minstrel Show". I believe the films and tapes that survive at the BBC have stickers plastered on them stating they cannot be repeated or used due to racist content. It was one of their most popular shows until the PC brigade came along. They say it is inexcusably racist for white people to black up. So why then is it acceptable for David Walliams to black up for "Little Britain" and use images of that on books and DVD's where everybody can see he is blacked up?

I think the biggest example of idiocy concerning the B/W minstrals was when Lenny Henry, who used to perform with them, said how he it never occurred to him that they were racist until someone told him they were.

Lenny Henry in the 70's and very early 80's was also a rather un-PC act. It was when he was working on the lame Tiswas follow up, OTT in 1982 that Dawn French began giving him hell about it.

It was around that era - early years of Thatcherism in fact - that PC really kicked in big time.
