Offered me a "safe seat" for the Liberals when I got loads of votes in the 1979 by-election. I roared with laughter and said "Clement, the Liberals don't have a safe seat". "Oh yes we do", he answered - Jo Grimond's seat in the Orkneys. He was right but still I gratefully declined. a very interesting character.. with those large bloodhound eyes. Father of Emma and Mathew-who no-one thought would go on to become a top PR and marry Rupert Murdoch's daughter Elisabeth (and to his credit..reputedly disliked by Murdoch).

I'm fascinated to read of his other careers. I only ever saw him as the rather serious Liberal MP.

Pleased to see long and honourable tributes everywhere. He was a true British eccentric and symbolised everything we love about this country - even though he came from foreign stock.
