Very sad - he was a brilliant news reader and reporter.
I was lucky enough to sit next to him at my Godfather's 70th birthday celebrations about 20 years ago. Delightful man; tiny; spent his time persuading ladies of a similar age to dance with him and burying his nose in their bosoms!
We had long and fascinating conversations over the delicious meal.
And my godfather's brother Jock gave a superb speech; I was astonished. But later discovered he was an acclaimed public speaker.
My Godfather wasn't actually my godfather - he was my brother's godfather and his mother was my godmother, but easier to blur the detail!
He was Osborne Elliot and died last year; he was a huge editor (of Newsweek) and then became Deputy Mayor of New York under Abe Beame (we had dinner at Gracie Mansion several times) and Dean of Columbia University.
